Recipes for fresh pineapple & Quick questions?

I don't quite believe this myself but as far back as I can remember I don't recall eating fresh pineapple. So when I was shopping this morning I bought one, but I don't know what to do with it, I don't even know how to cut it.
Can somebody please help? Does it look or feel a certain way when it's best for eating? Do I cut it all up and store it in the fridge for eating as and when or should I only cut it when we are ready for eating it? Do I cut it into slices like with a melon? Should it be served with anything? etc. etc.
Any advice would be gratefully received.0 -
I tend to cut a slice off it, cut the skin off the slice and then put the rest in the fridge (whole) for later, it seems to keep nicely for about 2 days. I either eat it on its own or sometimes with cream!!!! Its also lovely in a fruit salad or on top of a pavlova!!!

you can juice them but you'll need to cut off the outer bits and remove the core, but that's really a waste of a good pineapple, better for something a bit past it's prime
one nice way of using pinepple in cooking is to cook either chicken or pork with it in a slowcooker
pineapple has a digestive enzyme in it called bromelain which will tenderise the meat making it just fall off the bone while adding a gorgeous flavour
also bromelain is useful for people with arthritis or rheumetism
i ate and drank a lot of pineapple/juice when i was pregnant as i had horrible problems digesting anything. the bromelain in the pineapples helped to break down the food so i could stop being so ill
it's also brilliant for breaking down catarhh, it makes it sorta frothy and it comes up quite easily after consuming pineapple (flesh or juice)founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
You guys are fab, thank you all.
HOLsale, never realised about the catarhh, I am suffering at the moment. thank you.0 -
HOLsale, wow, thanks for all that info, i never realised that!
I do the same as Catowen, cut a slive off the top, then cut the skin off.
Pineapple is gorgeous with chicken, green peppers, apricots, ala Tropical Chicken, i can give you the recipe if you like, very easy. It's delicious in sweet and sour too.0 -
Easy way to check if your pineapple is ready..........
The leaves at the top should pull out smoothly and easily when it is ripe and ready to eat. You can also use your pineapple as fritters, sweet and sour....

I know of another use for pineapple that prevents dogs doing a particularly awful thing. Best not share it in a food thread though

This enzyme also prevents gelatine from setting,so don't be tempted to put in a jelly.Tinned is fine because the enzyme has been destroyed during heat processing.
Apparently workers in pineapple processing plants have to wear special gloves because the enzyme will actually eat flesh!
Thanks for the tip about catarrh,I didn't know that.0 -
