ALL retailers hold the FULL card details on their systems for auditing purposes. THis should be for 6 years... So the tax man says...
When I say ALL I mean ALL. That includes your supermarket etc. While your reciept may only show 8 of the 16 numbers. The retailers side has it all....
Which is why any staff member at a retailer that has access to till rolls, takes orders over the phone, etc. Should have to go through a FULL vetting process, just like bank staff do.
But I guess that would cost retailers money and mean they can't get most of the staff they do, as they would not pass muster. ( No disrespect to the vast majority of these staff menbers )
Sorry but this is just absolute rubbish!
There is absolutely no auditing requirement to store any credit card information at all. Merchants may have to store details of the transaction but this doesn't have to include cardholder information which can be deleted/truncated/obfuscated/removed/etc.
The tax man does not insist that cardholder information be stored at all let alone for 6 years.
Many merchants only display the first 6 and last 4 digits on their merchant receipts and some even less. Some merchants don't even print a receipt. Pretty soon all merchants will only be allowed to print the first 6 and last 4. Besides which not all card numbers are 16 digits.

What's the difference between online, phone or in store anyway. If you hand over your information you're at risk. Besides I'm not aware of any cards that have a 6 year expiry on them!
You have misunderstood the governments requirements I am afraid. The governments rules do not insist that anyone keep cardholder information at all for any length of time. If you retain records for audit purposes then please feel free to delete cardholder data from those records.
There is a huge difference between online, phone and customer present transactions from both a risk and an attack vector point of view. For example customer present requires you to physically be present have the card and know the PIN, customer not present just requires you to have the card (Or know the PAN and expiry from the front and the security number from the back but not the PIN) and online depends on the merchant but might only need the information from the front of the card, both sides of the card or know the 3D secure/ Verified by Visa details.
How you obtain data from each payment channel and the controls that can be put in place to stop you are different too.
There is however always a risk.

Update, just to say co-op did as they had said and returned the fraudulently taken £1000 within 2 working days. I have had a letter from them today asking me to verify in writing that the transaction was nothing to do with me so it can be investigated further by their fraud team.0

I've been done too - £1264.85 from my Tesco card on the 21st as a payment to Tech Giants Walsall. Fortunately, Tesco have wiped it, changed the card and will be sending out the paperwork to 'prove' it's a fraudulent transaction.
I can't believe that in this day and age we're still subject to this kind of ridiculous fraud. There MUST be a way to stop it, surely?0 -
Just got my Tesco credit card statement £1199.05 Tech Giants never heard of them.
Just spoke to fraud department.cards are now stopped and sending a form to fill and say it's a fraudulent transaction.0 -
I also got my statement today from MBNA. Payment to Tech Giant Walsall of 499.99. MBNA have cancelled my cards and are refunding the money. Incidentally, I live in Scotland and have never heard of this company. I checked on Amazon and it appears to be a legitimate company in the USA which they use.0
