If it's a torrenting site, and you think it was used to store stuff, then you really don't know what a torrenting site is.....0

Quite possibly the US will persuade the NZ government to hand the bloke over to them for trial and/or shutdown the new site. According to the blurb the new site will only allow the same user that uploaded the material to download it - if it does do that then it can't be used for copyright infringement and there will be no case for taking it down. There were some file locker services that changed over to that when Megaupload got closed down. Many others didn't change and are still operating right now.0

This is what Magaload was all about, but was used to store and pass around ILLEGAL and copyrighted material, so was taken down by authorities
But that was only true in part .
One i and other had a number of files uploaded on the site as a convenient way to share various custom rom builds and modifications themes etc . That is 100% legal .
Two just like the multitude of other storage site Google Dropbox Apple Windows etc the owner did not supply illegal material his users did .
Three what on earth the OP is whining about i dont know ever hear of illegal Napster now legal Napster .
PS on the site being down yesterday it was well publicised BBC news that the site had taken to many applications for users .

The only problem I see with this is the US government who are funded and controlled by big media thinking they can police the world. In dotcoms case they asked him to keep files on his servers they had apparently identified as pirated and then used these same files as evidence to get a warrant. That's why still able to operate because the US lied, that's why he's not been extradited that's why the US case is seemingly falling apart and the NZ government are in trouble.
He's setting up a service similar to dropbox except with more free storage and encryption, there's nothing wrong with that. Not only that but it's distributed over various servers in different countries so there are multiple copies of your files, none of which are in the US hence out of they're jurisdiction. The only danger to your data is and had always been the US.0 -
I posted this as a warning hence the title "Bewarned Kim Dotcom (Megaupload) starts new file-sharing site" so if he does start as he did with megaload then others wont be in the same boat with legit files and being unable to get them back. the new site may start legit but it would not take much to make it the same as megaload. the only difference the site is not hosted on a US server0

I've never heard of 'megaload', I've heard of 'megaupload'
This was a site just like any other file hosting site (not file sharing) ie. you can upload your documents to it which produces a link that someone else can use to download from. If people use it to upload movies and music then this is down to the user, not the site.
Rapidshare, wetransfer, zippyshare are all the same and still going strong.
It has nothing to do with torrents or indexing sites, it is simply a site to allow you to upload larger files to where you may not be able to email as an attachment due to limits. I use wetransfer all the time for transferring music productions to a label or for design jobs to transfer large pdf designs to clients.0 -
yes i meant 'megaupload' which was hosted in the USA and the FBI took it down . yes others still do this, but are they hosted in the USA
Mininova and Piratebay were torrent sites which either changed or closed down otherwise they would have ended the same way as Megaupload.
all due to copyright laws being breached0 -

Yes but inadvertently breaching copyright with file hosting sites. They were designed to simply transfer documents from one user to another, obviously they were never meant for movies or music. In reality, what they are offering is perfectly legal, what users were using them for was illegal.
As for torrent sites, exactly the same thing. Torrent sites do not host or supply anything. They are simply an indexing site.
Ironically, the worst site of all for illegal download links is google....0
