There is nothing in the article you've linked to that mentions anything to do with "megaupload" and illegal activity that he was tried and convicted for?

Some of the stuff he got done for as a kid was not dissimilar to people like "captain crunch" and the "phone phreaking" activities he got up to.
Other parts of it are bluster and grandstanding by KDC to garner attention.

The bit about buyitnow can be looked at as he didn't understand what he was doing or he did and decided that the "crime" was worth the time. He isn't exactly the first person in the world to talk up / down stock to manipulate a market.
Hell i'd go so far to say it is likely "hedge funds" did it every single day of the week up until the last couple of years.

I've never stated on here i have any belief KDC is a nice guy. It doesn't, however, mean a government or agency can shut down a business because they "can".
If they can't even be bothered to follow due process how are they behaving any better?
I'm not American but i'd be annoyed that my tax dollars were getting screwed over by that sort of incompetent behaviour.

regardless if they are respected worldwide but the FBI is a LEGAL authority

What is the reason for this stupid thread?
  • railbuff wrote: »
... trouble is too many peopel on MSE cant read or this they know better that the LAW

I must confess I am struggling to read/ make sense of your drivel. The FBI is not the world police however much it would like to be. The USA authorities like to get their sticky paws in everyone's business across the planet.
Now thank you for your warning but don't slag of the community here just because the majority of posters don't agree with you.
The new site sounds good IMO

yes sites like this are handy, but megaload was taken down for racketeering, copyright infringement and money laudering.
He's said it again!!!! Are we in a parallel universe where the same posts are on loop??

:rotfl: Sorry I didn't realise this was a wind up, I fell for it doh!

I would suggest putting more time into your business/the company you work for than surfing wikipedia, taking whats written as gospel and relaying it on here.

Some posters already explained the whole raid was illegally done but maybe you missed those posts?

people that use offshore host only do this so they can have illegal stuff on their sites with less risk of being taken down.

I guess Google only have non-US servers for hosting illegal content. Same thing with Akamai too I guess.

when you get big enough that even a small amount of downtime costs you money, you spread your service across the globe, ideally duplicating it in several countries, then when some part of the internet becomes slow or unavailable you silently redirect your users to a mirror that is still up. In the old days you would ask people to manually choose a mirror, these days you do it transparently in the background, or outsource it to a content delivery network such as Akamai.

The ironic thing is MegaUpload did actually comply with US law. The DMCA protects service providers from prosecution providing that they comply with DMCA takedown requests in a timely manner.

Did KDC make a lot of money from the huge amounts of pirated content on his service, of course he did, but he was still operating legally. Youtube has the exact same issue, look at the number of full length films TV shows you can watch on there, and the amount of music that people put up without approval from the record labels. Youtube have to take these down when given a DMCA request, just as MegaUpload did.

The only real difference is MegaUpload was run by a non-US citizen with a sketchy past that would make it easy for the US authorities to smear him with little repercussions back home. People would be a lot more annoyed if they treated YouTube in the same way.
