Immigrants & Benefits

Perhaps I am out of kilter on this one, but my understanding is that economic migrants are filling job vacancies which are not being taken currently (by people already located here). This is the usual justification.
.
A huge urban myth.
As was pointed out, those cabbages were still being picked in 2004 prior to the Poles comming.
Also with effective welfare policing those Brit workers who prefer bed would soon change thier habits.
It's such a council of dispair to suppose we would go under without flocks of immigrants.
Furthermore, the roads are already choc full, do we really need even more people on this island?0 -
Anybody who is willing to work is adding value.
I've known British tradesmen loose thier livelyhood thanks to cheaper workers. Great for you greedy consumers, not so good for the family of the British builders concerned. Ah well, I guess their kids don;t matter and need to suffer as long as us greedy consumers get those bargain prices.0 -
The Welsh are British (whether we like it or not).
.
What's that supposed to mean?. That's what I call Xenophobic, idiot.
Considering we have more natural resources i.e water (which feeds parts of England), gold (for Royal Rings) and had vasts amount of coal mined and steel made compared to some parts of the country. You may not like the welsh but England have had plenty from us in resources.
Wales also supplies vast numbers of recruits into the British Army. My husband is English, but I don't hold it against him - much!.:)Mortgage: Aug 12 £114,984.74 - Jun 14 £94000.00 = Total Payments £20984.74

Them Welsh are a bit touchy though.0 -

Not here Conrad.
A friend did allow a Polish outfit to quote for her extension. When she declined the quote they thought they could seal the deal by building a large fountain in her front garden included in the price !
:rotfl:
Perhaps having a fountain is a sign of prosperity in some EU countries.0 -
I can see that soon Britain will be run by immigrants and the British will all be on benefits, that makes no sense at all.0

Granted they weren't bus bombs, but haven't you heard of Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma City) or Eric Robert Rudolph (Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta) or Luke Helder (the Mailbox Pipe Bomber)?
The US is perfectly capable of creating its own home-grown whackies - and that's discounting the ones in the NRA who are quite happy for nutters to go on the rampage with guns, provided no-one tries to take away their "goddamned right" to bear arms.0 -

Without 'unskilled' immigrants, who do you expect to be working for minimum wage in this country? Or have you failed to notice those people working cheaply for your benefit in retail, hospitality, hygiene etc.
No sensible unskilled British citizen should come off benefits and work for minimum wage - it doesn't make rational sense.
In all areas of the country... millions of British citizens..born and bred...work for the minumum wage.
In my region all jobs would be filled by UK residents ...there simply wouldn't be a need for overseas visitors...many posters on here could say the same.
There really isn't a major issue with the motivation of our people....yes there some who are getting away with it...but its not millions....infact theres people who are in work who won't work....its always gone on.
If there is an issue with low pay its the long term future of being on it...theres not much hope apart from survival so maybe some people back away from this idea.
The idea of benefits in work is still the same under the present government...work should pay...so we have a situation where low pay plus benefits and full benefits have a similar outcome.
On the subject of immigrants working for low pay...how do we know how much they are being paid...it might be £3 per hour..who knows.
What we saw a few years ago was an opening of European borders without proper controls....not just in the UK.. but other countries.
These things happen...its always a hindsight debate in politics...hopefully there'll be restrictions in the future as its clear its a struggle to cope..0
