Without 'unskilled' immigrants, who do you expect to be working for minimum wage in this country? Or have you failed to notice those people working cheaply for your benefit in retail, hospitality, hygiene etc.

No sensible unskilled British citizen should come off benefits and work for minimum wage - it doesn't make rational sense.

We have around a million or so people on the dole, who would be capable of doing these jobs.

If a load of Romanian layabouts come over here and go straight on benefits I would predict that will swing the referendum in favour of leaving the EU, regardless of what Cameron negotiates (I don't think he'll ever get agreement to stop the free movement). The Europhiles should think on this.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

What about the people who register as self employed and then claim top ups by way of credits, as GD mentioned?

They are half way through implementing Universal Credits. Changing things so drastically right now would blow the budget wide open (as if it isn't already open).

You are in the industry I believe, any news on how the Universal Benefit IT side is coming along? Is it going well?

There is no country in the history of histories that has closed its borders and ended in anything other than disaster.

Japan tried it and met Admiral Perry.

North Korea tried it and turned into North Korea.

The decline of the Roman Empire can be traced to the exact point the Romans stopped trying to expand and engage with the known world, and instead decided to try fencing it off.

The reason immigration worked so well for Rome was because they offered Roman citizenship in exchange for being Roman. This seems to be something that has utterly escaped the left driven multi culti shame driven rubbish we have in the UK, and also explains why there havent been any US born bus bombers in the States.

They might be capable, but are unwilling. That's the problem, not immigration.

I would suggest there is a big difference between closing borders and restricting entry to those that have a value to the country.

I don't work directly for DWP at the moment, but you know how it's a small world. I work with people who are recently ex-DWP.

You know how it works with these grand IT schemes.

They promise much in the early stages.

It's quite a complex task I'm led to believe; I'd suggest we expect cost and timescale overruns

One of the things which will blow them off track is changing requirements however.

Anybody who is willing to work is adding value.

Which I believe needs to be addressed, rather than swept under the carpet. I also do not believe it is as bad as many make out.

Not if they are preventing someone else or there is no work for them.
