Immigrants & Benefits

Can anyone clear this up?

It's on question time at the moment. A business leader states immigrants cannot get benefits for 3 months. However, Nigel Farage states if they say they are self employed and seeking work, they can get benefits from day one.

Both the tories and labour are struggling, but they obviously don't want a referendum....

Nigel seems to be getting the biggest applause's. Do like the way he talks.

  • Well we do know that UK nationals are twice as likely to claim benefits as immigrants....
The notion that foreign-born people are less than half as likely to be claiming benefits as UK nationals is well founded in the available figures from the DWP and the ONS.

They indicate that around 15 per cent of UK nationals are currently claiming working age benefits, compared to six per cent of foreign nationals

So this whole "benefits tourism" scare story appear to be just another bit of silly anti-immigrant propaganda and fearmongering.

He reminds me of Mr Bean, or maybe Kenneth Williams.

    Only less credible....

Thanks Hamish, but any idea on the answer?

We've got a businessman saying one thing, and Farage saying the other. Farage can usually destroy his opponents with very simple facts, so wondering if he was being completely truthful?
  • Thanks Hamish, but any idea on the answer?

Immigrants covers a whole lot of different categories....

For most non-EU immigrants, such as students, family members, spouses of Brits, etc, the answer is most certainly no. They have no recourse to public funds for at least 2 years, and in some categories not at all.

For European citizens it gets complicated.

    So seems Farage is right.

    Which seems absolutely absurd.

    Are you surprised?

I rather suspect he is exaggerating both the extent of eligibility and whether or not its actually a problem in the real world.

Are there any figures available to show how many Europeans declare self employment and then claim benefits?

Surely Farage would have trotted them out by now?

Not really it was you would expect.

You have mainly young, fit males coming to endeavour to get work they don't have the baggage of life with them. They are prepared to move, be flexible and live in poor conditions.

The lady guest seemed to have read the wrong report on Boston according to both Shapps and Farage. Those two on nearly the same page?

Bulgarians and Romanians will be more likely to claim than Poles and Lithuanians. Whole different mindset - I read the history of Bulgarias transition from the Societ Union that described how all the crooks took control.

Millions of unemployed Brits, so what do we do.............
