Immigrants & Benefits

Both, when you couple open borders with different levels of benefits (an access to them) and totally different economies, it encourages benefit tourism.
I truly cannot see the benefit to the UK of attracting unskilled workers when we currently have high unemployment and a housing shortage.0 -
The usual rubbish from Hamish I see.
EU Immigrants can claim benefits from the day they come here if, as Nigel Farage pointed out they state they are self employed and seeking work. The point is that little or no checking is done to verify this - so anyone with any common sense would realise that this is going to be exploited by many. Hamish spends a lot of time pulling out reports and graphs but seems to have an utter lack of common sense.
That said, if they don't use the "self employed and seeking work" line, they can still claim benefits after just 3 months of being here. Not exactly hard to achieve, it's widely known that friends, family, or other connections can and will put them up for 3 months until they can claim benefits.
And did you know that they can claim for child benefits even if the Children are living back in their native country? Once again, little or no checking is done to verify the existence of these Children - taxpayers money handed over with a smile.I live about 20 miles from Boston and go there occasionally and the town centre is like a foreign country. It's really weird. You can walk around for ages and not hear an English voice.
There are huge issues with Eastern European migrants - I'm not talking about jobs, it's drink driving, uninsured driving, driving illegal cars, drinking in the streets and car parks, (yes, the indigenous population do it too, but they aren't English voices you hear), illegal stills etc.
Would I want to live there - no.
And that's putting it mildly - you forgot to mention the anti-social behaviour, regular violence, urinating in people's front gardens, corruption from local employment agencies who will only employ non English leading to a large proportion of the unskilled labour positions being filled by EU migrants. This leads to a situation where a large percentage of factory workers (over 87%) are non English, and there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that those people make it untenable for the English to work there.
There is no doubt that there is a huge problem in Boston, and other surrounding areas.0 -
They say Boston has 1300 unemployed people and 10k immigrants - so I guess the reasoning is that if there weren't any immigrants there would be a labour shortage.
Nigel Farage made a point in the programme last night saying that pre 2004 the crops weren't left to rot in the fields in Lincolnshire - he was absolutely correct they weren't. Portuguese (often seasonal workers) picked them....

There was an interesting piece from Peter Hitchen in the Mail (I know) but the article was decent.

Peter Hitchin is a pathetic excuse for a human being.
By all accounts it sounds like Boston is a bit of a mare, but what are the police doing? Why aren't they out in force, enforcing the law?
I'm all for immigration and the idea that Britain does not need migrants is utter nonsense, however, what is not acceptable is that 80% of jobs created in the last 10 years have gone to migrants, often because locals prefer to be on benefits than have a job on the minimum wage.
That is simply not right!0 -

They are tied.
Pull up a drunk uninsured driver who speaks little English and has no fixed address and no provable ID - not much they can do.0 -

My cousin's business needs staff. To be specific, a few people with production management experience in the area of engineering and manufacturing they are in.
He can find (and has found) cleaners or warehouse operatives, in general low skilled jobs. He is not short of people willing to take on those roles, indigenous or otherwise.
We need managed immigration to fulfil specific shortages. A blanket open policy is not an efficient way of going about it.0 -

Obviously he must hit a few nerves when he points out some real facts.By all accounts it sounds like Boston is a bit of a mare, but what are the police doing? Why aren't they out in force, enforcing the law?
Are you kidding? The Police are overstretched as it is. There is nothing they can do as ILW said above. If you watched Question Time last night you may have noticed that the lady from Boston stated she had homeless migrants camping in her land, and went on to state that the Police aren't interested. The Police are just one more authority who try to deny there is a problem.I'm all for immigration and the idea that Britain does not need migrants is utter nonsense, however, what is not acceptable is that 80% of jobs created in the last 10 years have gone to migrants, often because locals prefer to be on benefits than have a job on the minimum wage.
And do you have empirical evidence that the locals prefer to be on benefits than work? Who do you think did the factory work prior to 2004?0 -

We are going to have to tighten our belt on who we allow into our country otherwise we are never going to resolve this issue.
Lincolnshire farmers I believe supply the major supermarkets with produce and they are price controlled so they would choose to employ the cheapest labour to reap the best profits.
That is probably the reason for so many non English speaking people being in the area.0 -

So this whole "benefits tourism" scare story appear to be just another bit of silly anti-immigrant propaganda and fearmongering.
The figure for non-uk nationals should be virtually zero, isn't the whole point of mass immigration (as you point out incessantly) to benefit our economy, these percentages would suggest otherwise.
Not only that, the figures in blue are no doubt exacerbated by non foreign nationals displacing nationals from jobs.0 -
What I find surprising when I visit family in two spots in the country that have EU immigrants is the number that are on the streets mid day when you would expect them to be working or sleeping, if on shifts. they aren't in work clothes."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I didn't want anyone to think I was exaggerating.0
