Really? The iphone 5 p1sses all over the S3 on nearly every hardware test. Unless you know better than the folks at Anandtech?:rotfl:
    The iPhone 5 Performance Preview

How much difference do thses figures make in everyday usage?
As I understand the BM tests vary on different tests.
However if someone wants an IP5, they get one, if someone wants an S3 they get one, they are both better than the other but only to the owner/user who does not have to defend their choice to anybody but themself.

Yes, if you're paying £20ish for an s3 that's better value than an iphone. However, as a heavy user (calls and data) I'd be paying a similar sum, plus a whole extra for data and calls. I'm guessing here, but I'd think that for an S3 on £20 a month you'll not be getting much in the way of allowances.

Its not £20ish, its less than £20

I do not call much so the 200 minutes are largely untouch. But the 750mb data is much more than enough for me. I largely use FB few times a days, have sync on, and surf net every now and then.

Its good for you that you think iphone is more value for money. But there are so many ways of getting the S3 cheap, making it a much better value even in the long run. Still, at the end of the day, if it serve your purpose, I guess that is all that matters.

Now, even I will admit that there is a big financial payoff to owning an iphone - the resale value

Heck, my wife is still using an iPhone 4 that would probably resell for more than my brand new Samsung galaxy S3

I'm not sure we ever factor this into the 'total cost of ownership over 2 years' really. Of course, this high resale value is purely due to the iHype factor.. but it's a factor to include

(I got my s3 three weeks ago.. £26 a month, unlimited calls & texts, 1gb of internet. Phone cost £20 but I got £50 of cashback at the same time... I'm a heavy phone user so it's a great deal for me)

If I'd plumped for an iphone5, the contract would be identical but cost £10 a month more (phone free) - making it £220 more expensive than a S3

After a couple if years of iphone use, I eventually started to find iOS very limiting after a while. I was forced to do it apple way or no way.

Since moving to Android (mostly because of the totally rubbish maps and unethical business practices of apple) I have discovered how great Android can be.

I picked up a Nexus 4 for £270 sim free from Google (with a £5/month unlimited data/unlimited landline/100mins tmobile mobile deal) , and it's so much better in every respect. Google Now is fantastic and I love Google music and the freedom of not being tied to iTunes.

I really feel that Apple has lost it compared to the latest high end android handsets. With a android I can make my phone mine, unlimited ways to make it mine.

Most of my Co workers are also now android converts, with only marketing types hanging in there! So it's not just me that feels this way. The world has moved on from iphone.

I wouldn't take too much notice of benchmarks, my nexus4 feels way faster and smoother than my iphone ever did. The latest android is really smooth

iOS6 hasn't proved too popular with Apple fanbois!!
  • Which, if true, begs the question why don't Apple, like several other mobile manufacturers, offer a 2 year warranty as standard?

Good question. Why do Mercedes, BMW etc only offer 3 year warranties as opposed to Kia's 7 years and Vauxhall's 10 year?

Probably because they don't feel the need to convince consumers that what they make isn't crap.

I dunno, maybe bcos BMW and Benz has only 3 models in the top 100 reliable UK cars?

never trusted BMW and Benz when it comes to reliability and this is probably why. :D

So lets say if you sell your phone in 2 years time, with an IP5, would you get £220 more than the S3?

IP4s is now selling at £230 and S2 at £140 (recycle site), doesn't sounds like you can make the difference back.

Still think that money wise, I will still save more with S3 (including selling it in 2 years time) than I would have if I went for iphone. :p

s3 will work perfectly fine in 2 years time because you can still run the os it came with. iphone 5 will force you to upgrade to ios8 or ios9 2 years later which will slow the device to a grind and make it useless.

i have a iphone 3gs that ran ok on ios3, then apple forced me to upgrade to ios4 and then ios6. its annoying as hell.
  • Could always just hang on for the S4 and be ahead of everyone
