FYI - 'walled garden' is nothing to do with control; it's a software architecture decision. It creates a technical barrier between the OS and the apps (it's why you can't have widgets in iOS; it would need an intermediate layer to talk between the OS and apps)

It's one of the best, and worst parts of iOS. I love it because apps/widgets don't slow down the phone. It helps with memory management. It unfortunately cripples functionality in terms of sharing files between apps (that's why so many support dropbox; it acts a hard disk for the phone)
  • The arguments flowing back and forth about the merits of ios v android are all, largely, correct. Just pick one or the other and you'll most likely really enjoy your device.

Concerning immediate value to the consumer, I think the s3 sits slightly ahead of the iphone 5. There's not a huge price difference but you do get a bit more bang for your buck with the s3 in terms of screen size, expandable memory and general flexibility.

However, when I decided to get my iphone 5 I did so with the intention of keeping it in good condition for the life of my contract so I can look forward to selling it on. If current trends are anything to go by, then Apple devices tend to be worth a fair bit more than the comparable android devices after a couple of years.

I got my S3 free on contract costing me less than GBP20 a month. That in itself makes S3 a much cheaper choice than iPhone 5. Given the money I saved from getting S3 rather than IP5, in 2 years time, even with S3 selling at a lower price than IP5 (Samsung galaxy phone is holding their value quite well, not as good as iphone, but good enough), think I will still save a lot more than if I got an iphone 5.
  • Don't you have to add £60 (2nd year warranty) to the price of the iPhone 5 to fairly compare the 2?

BTW, I am not an S3 user/hugger, my phone (Huawei G300) cost £6 more than the cost of the iPhone 2nd year warranty and has a 2 year warranty as standard. :money:
  • Hey buddy
I will suggest you to go for iPhone, but if you are looking for a change then prefer to have Note 2 instead of S3.
  • Yes, if you're paying £20ish for an s3 that's better value than an iphone. However, as a heavy user (calls and data) I'd be paying a similar sum, plus a whole extra for data and calls. I'm guessing here, but I'd think that for an S3 on £20 a month you'll not be getting much in the way of allowances.

I suppose, concerning contracts, usage determines, to a point, value as well.

As for the warranty - no, I don't see it as necessary. Worst comes to the worst I'll argue my rights under the SoGA. In my experience (which includes having worked for a phone retailer) iPhones tend to require a lot less in the way of warranty repairs than other phones.

As I said in my previous post, this is all down to personal choice. I latch prefer iPhones ( design and software) over the alternatives. Residual value is a bonus which confirms, to me, that I've made the right choice.

Bag for buck on both hardware and contract, its pretty clear cut. S3 wins hands down.

Really? The iphone 5 p1sses all over the S3 on nearly every hardware test. Unless you know better than the folks at Anandtech?:rotfl:

Which, if true, begs the question why don't Apple, like several other mobile manufacturers, offer a 2 year warranty as standard?
