My engagement ring cost a fairly average amount over 20 years ago, and I've never wanted any other expensive jewellery. I prefer beads and ethnic-type earrings anyway, and if I spent £100 on an item of jewellery I'd just not get £100 worth of enjoyment out of it. And I'd never spend more than £20 on a watch, as I'd be scared of losing it.

My eternity ring has bigger diamonds but didn't cost any where near £1600 (althoug it's a few years old now) It came from an independant jewellers where I always get my jewellry from. I have a couple of nice pieces but nothing too big or flashy and I tend to wear the same old most of the time. I fancy a genuine Rado watch but at £900 it's a bit steep and my DH would probably fall over if he had to fork out that much for a watch.

  • OK, got married 6 weeks after we met, no engagement ring just a lovely £180 wedding ring, then 1st anniversary, £500 eternity ring...we saved!! (We did get married on xmas eve so an easy way to get a lovely present)!

Then, when we had a little more money about 5 years later, i dug out my mums engagement ring, tatty and old, so old i never knew 'quite' how much it was worth...had it valued at £1800 in the tatty state it was, missing 2 of it's 15 diamonds, the centre one being 1 carat alone, so got it fixed and ...'finally hubby proposed' lol
bless, we never had a penny when we met and married, saved for everything, never borrowed, but it all came good in the end and now i have 'bling'...Then when we actually 'made' a bit of money as a complete surprise, i got some real bling 1 carat diamond earrings...well, for me that's enough.
Im happy with my lot now.
  • My engagement ring was £500 (and cheaper than anyone else's I know) - H says he would have liked to have go tme a bigger diamond but that was our budget and I love it, of course. Then when it came to choosing wedding rings, we set ourselves budgets of £250 each - he wanted a two-colour one that came in at over £300, but I liked a white gold one that was reduced to under £100 in the window. When she came to ring it through the till, the assistant laughed and said "I can't believe this!" - my ring had been reduced on the computer to £29.99! I don't even think you could buy the gold for that! So I may have a 'bling' engagement ring compared to some people, though it's not flashy at all, but my wedding ring is very MSE :)

My eternity ring came from Beaverbrooks, but tbh I only wear it for special occasions because I'm scared it will get lost/damaged.

Please learn from me, I thought along these lines and we were burgled and mine was taken from a "they'll never find it here" place. Have had replacement engagement ring, but it's not the same, i do however, NEVER go out without it, I'd rather have it broken than lost.

To OP if your hearts set on having something, are you near enough to the Jewellry Quarter in Birmingham, you'll get much better quality and value for money.

One thing that really jumped out at me is

My wedding anniversary is coming up and I would really like my husband to buy me

Perhaps your hubby is feeling that it's our anniversary and that any money that's going to be spent should be on both of you and that's why he's digging his heels in

My OH bought me a gorgeous pink sapphire ring in the shape of a love heart and tbh I don't care if it cost him £2 or £2 million, it's the love and thought behind it that means more than any price.

have you considered getting it from america?
seeing as our pound is worth about 2 dollars at the moment you could get a lot more for your money...

i know of people on some wedding forums ive been on that designed their own, hade it made and shipped over and it all cost less than a trip to a jewellers in your local highstreet and meant a lot more to them as they decided exactly what they wanted instead of picking the best of the choice in the window.

I got my engagement ring from America, approx £800 for 3/4 ct and when we went back two years ago I got a 1ct eternity which wsa bit more expensive. It is defo worthwhile if you find a jeweller prepared to ship.

Other than that have you ever looked at Geraldonline? Some gorgeous ones here:

My engagement ring cost about £170 (knocked down from £250) but that was in 1998. My wedding ring was £40 (2001) and eternity ring was about £150 (2003). We saved for every ring and that is what makes them special. Even if they had been £20 each I would still treasure them as much as it is the sentiment behind them that makes them special.

I did have a different engagement ring to begin with as hubby took his mum  with him to pick it, I of course graciously accepted it when he proposed out of the blue but a few months later I told him I didn't like it (it was hideous) and he took me to pick a new one.:T

For my eternity ring hubby just took me to jewllers after our son was born to show him what I liked - he didn't buy it that day he came home from work a few weeks later with it, so that was nice.

No item of jewellry I own cost more than £30, but sentimentally they are priceless. I could never justify spending more than £50 on single piece of jewellry.
