Any of you ladies not own any expensive jewellery?

Does it bother you?

My wedding anniversary is coming up and I would really like my husband to buy me a diamond eternity ring. He thinks this is unreasonable as we would have to borrow to get it. I don’t own a single piece of expensive, quality jewellery. I don’t even have an engagement ring. My wedding ring only cost £150.

I am not talking about getting something so expensive the repayments would cripple us, but a debt we can manage on 3 years interest free.

Most of my girlfriends have at least one “bling” item. Some of the have several. I just feel it is every ladies right to have one lovely piece of jewellery.

Am I being unreasonable?

This is the item I am after LOL

If you need to borrow to get it then you shouldnt be wearing it! those diamond will soon wear off every time the direct debit comes out of the joint account

Just because you dont have any expensive jewelry does not mean you are any less valued. My husband told me to go buy my own engagement and wedding rings and just gave me the cash - at the time I was a little upset but I do know he loves me even though he doesnt shower me with expensive gifts

Will you be buying your partner something of equal value? Thought not.

You could have a nice holiday somewhere for £1600 that way the pair of you get something nice to remember.

I would feel guilty wearing something that expensive!
You say that this would be a debt you can afford for 3 yrs - what if something happened job wise... or worse!.... how would you feel then?
To be honest I cant believe you posted this on a Money SAVING board.....

My most expensive item of jewellery is worth about £150 and that is my engagement ring. Not having more expensive jewellery doesn't bother me in the slightest. Always a worry for friends who go out with expensive jewellery items on, something I would rather not have on my mind.

I don't think you are unreasonable for wanting something, but it isn't something I would get into debt for, never. If I did own something like that I probably wouldn't wear it for fear of it being lost or stolen and would have to pay extra to have it insured.

It is not really about that. More about the fact I have never even had an engagement ring, let alone anything else. Men don't get engagment rings last time I looked!

All those years ago we could never have afforded it. I am sure laods of blokes use credit to get an engagement ring. I am thinking of using my tesco vouchers to buy something from goldsmiths, but will take years!

Dont know how much my engangement ring cot as hubby wont tell me! However if he gave me a piece of tin as a suprise aas an eternity ring I would be happy!

If you want bling get a Range Rover. If you want love money cant buy that!

My eternity ring is my husband and my children!

BTW I nearly fainted when I was told my wedding ring was going to cost £180, I would have preferred £30. Its the symbol not the price!

I'd rather take years than pay what, £45 a month for something to wear on your finger, just my opinion of course, more so after your post about disposable income previously. Trying to reason with a working partner about what is reasonable personal spending money when you have kids etc he most likely would be thinking you're just wanting it for yourself which is why you said you think he is being unreasonable.

If he thinks you are being unreasonable then it's not really being bought with him wanting to, as an engagement ring. The name 'engagement ring' isn't what it is in my opinion, it's why it's given.

That post isn't really relevant now as I am starting a new job on monday, so we will be £800 a month better off.

Oh congratulations, I remember reading about the problems you were having when it came to going to work etc, really brave of you, well done.

I think this is one of those things where everyone will have a set opinion on. My partners father buys his wife expensive jewellery a lot, thankfully they have the money to do so and it is never on credit etc, but she rarely wears any of it, special occasions only. Just seems such a waste to me, I think the contents of her jewellery box which rarely sees daylight is worth about the same if not more than their home.

  • Soozy,

I don't think you are being unreasonable, but only if you could afford it, and it would be better to pay for it upfront, would mean more to you both i'm sure...

Have you tried looking on ebay, just a thought, that way you could get a ring of the same ish value for less than halve the price?

For example;- Just had a quick look (very quick) and although this is £850, it's value is over £1,700 !! And it's ONE CARAT as opposed to the one you have seen which is Half a carat.

If you really must buy one then this is the route i would go down, then it will be yours.
