Went down very well with some Sirloin (half price in Tesco) cabbage and roast potatoes. Half of it was enough for the 2 of us. It was 4 1/4" across and 14 1/4" long. Couldn't go any deeper 'cos it goes into brash and clay.0 -
Bl**dy hell, the tops of mine don't look anywhere near that big John. And even when I grew them at my old place 20 years ago they never looked like that. Mind you I didn't know about cones then
I'm going to dig a couple up this weekend. I've got to see if I have one that stayed in it's cone and grew straight.0 -
I poured water around the top first and ran my finger round to see how big it was then poured water in the grove a couple of times and let it soak down. Then waggled it about to loosen it and pulled hard and out it came. :j0

I'm pretty sure MBE has rejected us folks. Is it time for a coup? Who shall we nominate as our new leader?
I haven't. Just not much time to spare at the moment - I've been away almost every weekend since August.
I don't think I'll be able to do this next year, so I hereby nominate you as my successor. Good luck!:T
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Good looking 'snip that. I've pulled up longer ones this season, but nothing more than 1½" or so across the top. I'd like to know how you got it that big so quickly - well done.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
Nothing special apart from filling a conical hole made with a crow bar, with sifted soil and a couple of handfuls of "Growmore" mixed in. I also chucked some more "Growmore" on twice during the summer. 3 seeds to each hole and pulled out the 2 weakest when they were about 2". That's it.0

I think I need to put my garden to bed for the winter. What do I need to do?0

Well done for 2nd MBE.
LV, compost everything is my No10 -
I am ashamed to say I have no compost heap - don't really have room for one. If I chop everything up very small and leave it in a heap on the ground, will magic happen?0
