An emergency on any flight means that the Airport Fire Service is put on call to deal with this in case of a major incident (a crash where lives are at risk) a decision of the Airport
This means they are unavailable for any other emergency so all arrivals and departures are affected until the emergency is over (a decision of the Fire Service)

That it was a BA flight that had the emergency is immaterial! Face it if the airlines can't rely on knock on incidents, neither can you!!

In March 2011 I booked flights through Lastminute.com for an urgent business trip to Providenciales Turks and Caicos Islands. All flights were connected starting from Malaga, Spain to Madrid then to Miami and then to Providenciales. All was fine as I received full confirmation of all flights in March 2011. In May 2011 I received notification from Lastminute.com that the initial flight from Malaga to Madrid (with Iberia) was changed by approx. two hours earlier. Not a problem as it meant I would arrive Madrid two hours earlier in plenty of time to connect with the next flight to Miami.
When I arrived at Madrid to check in for the Miami flight I was told that no booking had been made for me for any onward flights!! After hanging around for a few hours the Iberia desk (acting for BA but the flight was operated by AA) told me they would book me into a Hotel in Madrid for the night and I would be rescheduled for the flight next day at the same time in the morning.
Next morning I arrived in plenty of time for the flight - boarded the flight without any probem but I was then frog marched off the plane by security as they said I was not booked on the flight.... after explaining my situation again at the Boarding Gate they checked and advised me I was on the afternoon flight but it would not connect with my onward flight from Miami to Provo... what a mess again...more meetings missed and a second day delay...had to cancel and rebook Hotels etc...they then eventually found me a seat on the morning flight without apology (which I had held up while this was being sorted).
I have been in touch with Lastminute.co who polietly advised me to go away as it was not their problem on "flight only" bookings... so just contacted BA in Germany (as I originally made booking from Spain)... They seem to indicate that this is not a compensation matter under EU Regulations.. but they are looking into it ... don't expect much though... but caused me a load of grief at the time for over a twenty four hour delay in sorting this mess out and missing a complete day of business...

I am not sure what BA would do as it does not appear you were flying on any BA flights if I read your post correctly

    Booked on Last Minute
Iberia flight schedule change - all ok
Madrid to Miami flight was on AA but no booking

this should definitely be down to who you booked your flights through. Lastminute need to prove that you were booked on the flights you paid them for and then they should investigate what happened

I did all this with Lastminute.com. I have all the flight confirmation Emails from them and also the amendment Email..
The amendment Emal Email confirmed all onward flights as exactly the same - the only time change was the first flight - so whoever dealt with this didn't bother to add the onward flights again to the amedment.. hey ho....this is the second leg confirmation from Madrid to Miami....
    Airline:
    BRITISH AIRWAYS (BA)
    Operating Airline:
    AMERICAN AIRLINES (AA)
    Flight Number:
    BA 1539

  • I wonder if anyone has yet had a response from BA when making an EU261/2004 claim in respect of the 24 hr delay resulting from the cancellation of this flight.
I wrote to BA making my claim which I know was received by them at the Sudbury address on 29 Dec. Heard nothing so I contacted BA via their website two weeks ago. Heard nothing except an acknowledgement giving me a reference number. They haven't even come back with their usual "extraordinary circumstances" get out.
I'm minded to give them a couple of weeks and then send a LBA. Any other tactics I should be trying to chivvy them along?

No point in anything other than NBA/LBA so that's what I would do. But only send it if you mean it.
  • What is LBA?
  • Is anyone else claiming for compensation for flights cancelled because of the plane fire at LHR last May? Any successes?

IO think you will find that as the airport was CLOSED because of the emergency it is not the responsibility of BA.

Though it was one of their aircraft that was involved it makes no difference

LBA = Letter before action. You put the company on notice that unless they respond substantively you will commence legal proceedings.
