Mortgage Mama, I just wanted to tell you my story, to prove that I'm nearly as soft as you. :rotfl:

As well as cattle, we had sheep on our farm and like all sheep farms would get orphan lambs at lambing time. It was my job to give them their milk before and after school and I became quite attached to a castrated male lamb - he would follow me everywhere. So I begged my family not to send him to market (I reasoned that orphan lambs never made much at market anyway) even though I knew a castrated male sheep would be no good to us at all from a financial point of view.

Anyway they let me keep him - his name was Rambo! And my family used to curse a bit at shearing and dipping time knowing that they were paying to look after this "useless" creature, but he lived to a ripe old age and still used to come running every time he saw me even after I had left home.

If I'd got attached to one of the bullocks, I'm sure I would have been begging them to let me keep that too. :rotfl:

I havent read all the posts. Get him castrated. The local farmer had a very very quiet pet hereford bull and one day it turned. When it is a fully grown bull and it hears the cows bulling he will no longer be the sweet docile animal he is now

It`s nature. Anyway what about a companion for him, perhaps a dexter

edit: I just read some more posts and you have a castrated hereford cross and you are getting a companion. Sounds excellent.
  • HAve you got a dog? Why dont you try mating them before you get billy the bull castrated?
  • What and create a Lancashire Bull Terrier?

Ooo yes, Dexter house cows are lovely - and also very small compared to other cows.

I think that this is a picture of an unusually small cow or an unusually tall man  Anyway, there is a field of Dexters not far from my here and they're definitely not quite that small. :)

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.
  • Well done you and best of luck with Whiteface!

My cousin and her husband acquired a sheep in exactly the same way when they were living in Cumbria. He was the only black lamb in the flock in the neighbouring field and they got quite attached to him and couldn't bear the thought of him going to slaughter. He had the run of their enormous garden and a shelter but during really bad weather they use to bring him into the house! Apparently he was quite well behaved.

They've since divorced but Ba Ba is still doing well living with her ex!

There's always one MM, actually more than one on this thread, but never mind, just ignore them! I am enjoying this somewhat gentle thread. Dying to see the pic MM, preferably leaning on the work top!
