How many of those in debt entered themselves into debt with no idea how they were going to repay that debt?

Obviously some of you have hit upon hard times from UNFORSEEN circumstances coming up and biting you in the bum but I expect MOST, and I mean MOST, should have seen it coming.

This is like blaming the father for getting the woman pregnant because she let him have unprotected sex, isn't it?

Anyway, either way you are f****d.

(sorry, just bringing some mirth to a sad thread.)

im sorry but anyone with some common sense would have enough money set aside, at least say £50 set aside for emergencies so they wouldnt have to worry about feeding their child, your telling me that there is no way at all you could have had £50 set aside,
i can understand a series of unfortunate circumstances meaning you run out of emergency money but not having even enough for food set aside just seems silly

No, I disagree, unfortunate events took my spare cash, then follow on events meant I had no cash for nearly a year, I foolishly had to pay minimum payments on cards with cash taken from the card:o Sometimes it just cant be helped.

Let's not forget that it is the banks greed that has landed them in this situation. Instead of charging a figure that reflects the true cost of processing to them they have cranked up the fee to make a bit extra and this has left them wide open to the claims they are now facing. My debt was of my own making and I do think I should have to pay a fee for going overdrawn but because they grabbed that little bit extra I've been able to claim the whole lot back. Ironically I've only claimed 4 years of charges because for the last two I've got my finances in order and have been in the black!

Let us also not forget that the banks are not totally out of pocket. They may have to pay back the inflated fees charged to customers but they are keeping the interest (at very attractive rates to them) paid on unarranged borrowing. This is what the banks want and how they make their money. Some posters may feel noble about their 'in the black' accounts but the sad news is as good and loyal as you are the banks don't actually want you as customers, in short they cannot make any money off you - you are dead wood!

As for 'free banking' it's a myth! We have never had it in the UK, we pay for our services in a less transparent way than my sister does in the US for example where she is billed for every check, statement and ATM transaction. I cannot see this approach will every get a foothold in the UK, the competition for customers is too fierce, our banks are national not regional as in the US, and our whole attitude to banking is more sophisticated and advanced.

the poster was talking about one instance though when they needed a little bit of money over a couple of days
a perfect example of why to keep emergency money aside.
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • reehsetin.... meybe £50 is not a lot to you but its almost half of my weekly money. and with £10,000 student debt (accumulated through rent payments council tax payments and weekly UNextravagant living and childcare costs etc) to pay off, I do not have and emergency fund and cannot build an emergency fund.

Unfortunately I am in such circumstances that I depend on my payments coming into the bank on the day the are supposed to come in, and YES sometimes it is for food for the evenings meal.

Some people have to live like this you know
