  • Banks are greedy , true

So are bmw, ford , vauxhall , mercedes , they charge the earth for a car ...... so lets get all the car owners together and claim back their purchase costs.

why should we pay for our cars, its just not right ..... they should be free

Has anyone noticed that Cadburys made quite a profit this year?!? Maybe I can sue them for the extra stone I've gained!!

:rotfl: maybe you can claim back any gym fees you have (or could have had)spent.

I on the other hand need to look into the profit margin of Baileys:D

Let's not forget that it is the banks greed that has landed them in this situation. Instead of charging a figure that reflects the true cost of processing to them they have cranked up the fee to make a bit extra and this has left them wide open to the claims they are now facing. My debt was of my own making and I do think I should have to pay a fee for going overdrawn but because they grabbed that little bit extra I've been able to claim the whole lot back. Ironically I've only claimed 4 years of charges because for the last two I've got my finances in order and have been in the black!

Let us also not forget that the banks are not totally out of pocket. They may have to pay back the inflated fees charged to customers but they are keeping the interest (at very attractive rates to them) paid on unarranged borrowing. This is what the banks want and how they make their money. Some posters may feel noble about their 'in the black' accounts but the sad news is as good and loyal as you are the banks don't actually want you as customers, in short they cannot make any money off you - you are dead wood!

As for 'free banking' it's a myth! We have never had it in the UK, we pay for our services in a less transparent way than my sister does in the US for example where she is billed for every check, statement and ATM transaction. I cannot see this approach will every get a foothold in the UK, the competition for customers is too fierce, our banks are national not regional as in the US, and our whole attitude to banking is more sophisticated and advanced.
Free banking hasn't always been around you know, when I opened my first account back in 1985/86 I remember getting a statement listing all the charges for my cheques and standing orders etc. I can't remember what else was on it, but I do remember being extremely miffed back then!! Plus its not free for the bank to process cheques and credits or to keep branches open - if we're not careful everything will go like HSBC where you walk in and its an empty building full of machines!! Do we really want that??

While I fully understand why Edilass closed the thread. I believe that we have to allow open discussion on this. I fundamentally disagree with both the premise and the principles that Trademark espouses - and his assumptions of the impact on the market (please read my 'the impact on banking' article linked to from the main article - though i intend to write a blog explanding on this very soon).

Yet its important to be aware that this is a huge issue that is revolutionary and hits right across society and debate must be allowed. Therefore I have reopened the thread.

Yet let me remind all posters (with no specific poster in mind)

    1. Discussion is fine, insulting others isn't
    2. Sensitivity to the fact that the aim of these boards are to help people not persecute or make them feel guilty.

With that in mind i will permit the discussion to continue as long as those sensitivities are followed. If not. I will close and/or delete the thread accordingly - the prime concern of this site is to help people save money and take on big companies - its the motto on the front page and I will always prioritise that.

And finally may I remind you of the note on the top of the page.

Please be nice to all MoneySavers. There’s no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

Well, I've read this whole thread and I see things from both sides. Here is my own personal situation. My debt is purely down to living beyond my means, I have no-one else to blame but myself. So I find out I can reclaim Bank charges back, I am overjoyed. It will help clear some of these debts. But after reading some of the posts on here, I do understand I had the responsibility of being in charge of my finances and not going overdrawn, making sure I had enough money in there to make sure DD's went through etc....so I am still going to reclaim because I desperately need the money but I AM now changing my ways in regard to my finances, all down to the wonderful information on this site. I will make sure in future that I keep a keen eye on my bank statements and also keep in contact with them, if I think there is or will be any problem. I know not everyone's debt problems are down to overspending, but mine are and I must take responsibility from now on.

Martin you are a top banana.

    [STRIKE]My final comment.[/STRIKE]

Bank charges are not fair, something we all agree on :)

Some people re-claiming have got themselves in to this position by being stupid :(

Some people re-claiming have got themseleves in to this position through life throwing them a curve ball :(

    Re-claiming is fine.

Most people are going to end up paying for their banking, even when in credit, it was likely to happen anyway. It used to happen :(

Apologies to those I have offended, you are entitled to your opinions as am I. And good luck to those re-claiming.

Having lost a long and (IMHO) reasoned post due to close/open/whatever, to paraphrase my self:
    1. Banks should make fees and charges very clear
    2. People reclaming their charges shoud boycott companies paying kids or adults next to nothing so they can get stuff cheap.

    As if...

I totally disagree with you Al. :)

It used to also be that you were paid your wages into your hand at the end of each week. Do employers, banks and the government want to go back to those days? I think not.

Lets remember you don't HAVE to have a bank account to be employed in this country. It does seem to be some unwritten law however.

Imagine 10 million or so people suddenly wanting their wages in a brown envolope every week.

Come now that isnt in the spirit of discussion SS - what are you saying - your opinion is right and thats it??? Martin I believe opened this back up to allow us to discuss in a sensible way.

So I believe that some debt is the responsibility of the debtor and that the businesses they get that money from have a right to say they want some recompense when the money is not paid back. How much they ask is not necessarily right but they have a right to ask for what they like in their t and cs and then we decide if we want to do business with them.

Banks are not charities thank goodness cos they need to pay their savers
