Bank charges are not fair, something we all agree on :)

Some people re-claiming have got themselves in to this position by being stupid :(

Some people re-claiming have got themseleves in to this position through life throwing them a curve ball :(

    Re-claiming is fine.
exactly, the charges arent fair, but i dont think that can excuse personal responsibility, it is never the banks fault if you are in debt and any subsequent charges because of this

It used to also be that you were paid your wages into your hand at the end of each week. Do employers, banks and the government want to go back to those days? I think not.
True they don't as such it wont happen.
Lets remember you don't HAVE to have a bank account to be employed in this country. It does seem to be some unwritten law however.
Find me a large company willing to pay in cash.
Imagine 10 million or so people suddenly wanting their wages in a brown envolope every week.
    again, wouldn't happen.

The first stage will be automatic upgrades to accounts with frills, apathy will get most people.

Then charges for cheques and debit cards, with the line, that it is to be fairer to businesses, as their cost will be cut:rolleyes:

The problem is that the banks want more and more profit. When you read about their figures for the year its staggering. Yet when the customer tries to grab a little bit back they dont like the fact that someone is playing them at their own game. It would be very nice if they could just accept that their charges are unfair and reduce them to a reasonable amount i.e £5, and do this without charging any more on any other service they provide. But they wont do this. Why is this? Well, its all about greed. Someone on this thread was talking about the greed of people, well I think the greed of the banks far outclasses anything else and makes these people look like charitable monks in comparison.

Come now that isnt in the spirit of discussion SS - what are you saying - your opinion is right and thats it??? Martin I believe opened this back up to allow us to discuss in a sensible way.

So I believe that some debt is the responsibility of the debtor and that the businesses they get that money from have a right to say they want some recompense when the money is not paid back. How much they ask is not necessarily right but they have a right to ask for what they like in their t and cs and then we decide if we want to do business with them.

Banks are not charities thank goodness cos they need to pay their savers

No but these threads always turn into a 'insult those in debt' thread.

It's a crap enough struggle as it is without others having a pop at you from all angles.

And yes it was my bloody fault I got into debt!

I have always thought that free banking would disappear on the wave of people claiming back bank charges. However the wave has become an avalanche and surely there cannot be anyone left in the country who doesn't know that you can claim back bank charges.

There are two main areas that concern me:

    1) All the people claiming back charges accept that there SHOULD be a charge just not as much as it is now. So how many people have deducted the amount they agree they should have been charged and donated it to charity, or yet given it back to the bank?

    2) How many people having claimed back all their charges are now claiming a second time from the same financial institution? How many have ensured they now have a 'rainy day' fund to ensure they do not get caught out again. Doesn't need to be a huge sum. Everyone on here has access to a computer..keep check of what you are spending

I agree that some people have had misfortune in their lives and have racked up bank charges but why oh why do those people on very small incomes have direct debit payments set up? Draw out your money and pay for your bills etc with CASH, then you can't spend what you don't have, and there is no possibility of a direct debit sending you into a spiral of bank charges.

I shall be cross when/if I have to pay for my current account, but then so will all the people claiming back charges, only difference is they will almost certainly have charges as well.

So you had the flash lifestyle, new car? Are maybe like a large % ended up in a spiralling situation & were trying to keep a roof over you/r family's head, pay bills etc?

I'm reclaiming £1200 worth of charges, putting my letter in the post tomorrow (registered of course).

Yes some of these charges are down to my own carelessness, some are down to totally unavoidable circumstances such as redundancy, sickness, children being in hospital on the day you need to put money in the bank (lets face it, a sick child takes priority in your mind over whether or not you need to go to the bank), and not to mention wages department c*ck ups in not paying your full wage on the due date, (how come the bank's computer never crashes at the same time as the wages depts?)

I've been with my bank since 1981, when the bank charges (which apparently I agreed to) were £15, now they're £39, I was never asked if I agreed with the rise in the cost of the charges.

We have been trying to get out of debt for the past 2 years, with no help from the bank, only hindrance. They've been illegally charging me, I'm entitled to, and am proud to be, claim those charges back. If it causes them money problems they'll just have to stop paying hundreds of people to star in their awfully annoying adverts.
