but I really do support the principle of penalty for unauthorised borrowing.

I dont think any of us would disagree here, but its the size of the penalty that's the problem.

Im not sure this is an argument about charges though - if you are out of pocket very single month then something has to give and its not down to the banks its down to you. Why should the banks fund your debt?

I was replying to the posters question saying why can't they pay in cash!

That means finding an extra £216 a year. Believe it or not that is a lot of money for some people. The equivalent of maybe 3 months food!

I don't get what you mean by funding my/peoples debt?

I think she meant letting you have money with no charge. Now Nels will tell me I'm wrong:o

I think everyone is in agreement with that. Even me who was charged over a grands worth. The issue is the amount.

I have two current accounts with the same bank. Last year I had £12000 sitting in one just after we sold our flat to repay debts and the other account did not have very much money in it and I forgot to transfer some over to cover a direct debit that went out and the account went about £20 overdrawn. Before I knew it, the bank had charged me £60 even though all that money was sitting in the other account. I got it back but I was amazed that they would do that.

but my point is, not everyone is so lucky to just have 50 quid lying around :)
£50 as an example, £20 is more than enough to feed your child over 3 days like the poster needed
£20 is one months mobile phone bill, a couple of t-shirts worth
the price of one or two takeouts, i find it hard to believe anyone no matter how much in debt can not keep £20 cash aside to feed your child, im trying not to have a go at this one woman im sure i dont know all her circumstanceds but i find it inconcievable that a mother no matter what can not keep a little bit aside to cover over a couple of days to make sure that there is food in the house
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
