angierey wrote:i was not going to reclaim bank charges as there were not that many and because I had often had them reversed anyway
(my trick was to go into the branch 5 minutes before closing time and be slow, and annoyingly polite about wanting them to explain the charge over and over again because i didnt understand, they reversed the charge to get me out so they could go home basically)
But today, I opened this months statement to find that I am being charged £28 for being overdrawn. Not for weeks or days even, for a matter of hours!!
I noticed that the account was overdrawn by an entire £3 and paid it into the bank the same day the account went overdrawn.
How on earth can the banks justify this??? there was not even the costly sum of sending me a letter to notify me that would justify a £28 charge for this as the bank informs you along with your monthly statement. And there is no labour cost to the bank either as it is a standard part of the statement that usually (fortunately) says charges are £0.00
I am definately going to go ahead with claiming back charges, because this is totally unjustified, and I wonder how many times previously I have just paid it because I felt that it was my own fault and I should have been more careful0 -
Some people can't be blamed, things happen. But some of you have to take responsibility, don't you? To some extent?0

Nope, you'd put an item back, unlike the bank who say "we'll loan you have that £40 but we'll charge you £35 for it" plus as your overdrawn thats another £35.
£70 of charges to borrow £40? Is that worse than Welcome Finance?0 -
trademark wrote:I PAY FOR MY WAY IN LIFE , I DONT TAKE FROM OTHERS OR LEECH
I find your naivety quite astounding. Are we to assume from your posting that you consider people who have got themselves into difficult situations with their banks to be thieves and leeches?
As I have said before you have absolutely no idea what has put people in their situations and you are stupid enough to assume it is all about living beyond means and unnecessary spending.
Peoples lives aren't that straightforward and to assume they have chosen to put themselves in their situations is frankly insulting.
If you ever fancy a job change why not apply to a financial institution? With your hard heart in place you would be a great candidate to call people who are worried sick about their finances and harrass them for money.

from the BBC webby -
Barclays Bank has announced a record pre-tax profit of £7.14bn in 2006 - up by 35% on the previous year.
Yeah they are there to make money, but making that sort of cash while basically scaming people who were slightly late with a payment just is'nt on.
Think about this then, its funny that a letter they decide is "a rule" cost's £35 but the junk mail they send out on a daily basis trying to flog us their products is miraculously free for them to send.
The £35 letter is done automatically by a computer.
The the latest 'wonderful products' brochure had a team of demographic specialists, advertising execs, print companies, bank execs, endless meetings etc etc etc to produce it and it lands on my door mat free of charge!
They dont have to make billions, I'm fairly certain Barclays can drop from £7.14 billion to say around £6 and still just about be in the black!
What do you reckon?
Im sure the captain has all of our best interests at heart Nelly and that is why he does what he does.
I dont charge my customers for marketing (aka junk mail:D ) and I probably never will - though its worth a thought:D
On the other hand - at what point does a business become so big that it has to change the terms and conditions that each and every customer signed up for? Is there a profit level that you are allowed to make before people start to challenge your t and cs.?
Lets just say for example you have have a contract that says if your customer doesnt pay for the plastering you have done within so many days (which as a small business I bet you do - like I do) then the customer says your terms are not fair wouldnt it be reasonable to say Hang on you signed up for this if you dont want to pay - go somewhere else? and then how would you feel if your customer didnt not only pay but took some of your stuff and then sued you for charging too much to get it back!!
Ok its a very simplist view I accept but Barclays and the rest of the profit making banks are businesses not charities.
I know I have paid a couple of £30 quids over a lot of years where my planning has gone wrong and Ive asked and have a few turned over so I am not polishing a halo as one poster was accused of but I do have to say that I am also a big believer in personal responsibility and if I fook up my finances and I have signed to say I will pay for it then pay for it I should.
ahh well must be in a mood for a slating:rotfl: :rotfl:0 -

incenced at trademarks assumption that everyone in debt has lived beyond their means,
in 2001 I returned to college to study, the idea being that I could get off benefits and return some of what I had taken from the country.
in 2003 I left uni with degree and 2 diplomas.
in those 2 years i run up the lower than average student debt of £10,000
Now, I am worse off than I was before because childcare is now unavailable for me to go to work, and I am considered overqualified (and get passed by) for basic jobs at minimum wage that suit my circumstances of having no childcare institutions in the area therefore limiting the hours I am available for work.
now I am left to sit with a degree level education, hunting down cleaning jobs, and paying off my student debt from an income that barely covers the cost of living.PROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBTSDEBT FREE DATE 29th MAY 2010...... CANT WAIT!!!!0
