Here we go, everyone's debt has been caused buy the banks, sorry that is an urban myth.
Mine wasn't it was my fault.
Not to say some people's isn't. But not everyone's and that is what Martin keeps implying.
I'm not saying my debt is not my problem, i admit, i spent the money with out a gun to my head. However once you get to the position of needing literally every last penny in your account, being £25-£25 for going a few pounds overdrawn does not help.
Eg, we had £20 in our joint account, someone tried to put thru a DD for £25 which the bank bounced for insufficent funds,we were charged £25 for bounced DD which was charged immediately which put us ovedrawn which cost another £25.
All i can say is i hope you all never have financial problems.Madison's mum

Yeah you have some good points but the captain doesnt do what he does to make friends with big business now does he?
from the BBC webby -
Barclays Bank has announced a record pre-tax profit of £7.14bn in 2006 - up by 35% on the previous year.
Yeah they are there to make money, but making that sort of cash while basically scaming people who were slightly late with a payment just is'nt on.
Think about this then, its funny that a letter they decide is "a rule" cost's £35 but the junk mail they send out on a daily basis trying to flog us their products is miraculously free for them to send.
The £35 letter is done automatically by a computer.
The the latest 'wonderful products' brochure had a team of demographic specialists, advertising execs, print companies, bank execs, endless meetings etc etc etc to produce it and it lands on my door mat free of charge!
They dont have to make billions, I'm fairly certain Barclays can drop from £7.14 billion to say around £6 and still just about be in the black!
What do you reckon?0 -
This guy clearly has no idea of what its like to be in a financial pit. Before now the bank have wanted to charge me £125 on a certain date before pay day, i've called up and said sorry can you take those charges a couple of days later, their response a big fat no and oh by the way another £25 charge for going over your overdraft limit (obviously not by choice). So yes its a never ending cycle that is really difficult to get out of that banks just use and abuse to line their pockets.
I've claimed charges back on 2 accounts going back 6 years totalling around £4000, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!
For those just starting the process or in the middle GO FOT IT I wish you all the best of luck and hope you all get your money back.Remember ....its not a bargain unless you need it0 -

As for getting the charge & "ignoring the banks advice" once you start on a spiral like that which personally meant taking cash advances on 1 credit card to pay the min charges on everything else only stopped once i started a DMP.
As for bank customers paying for it its b******, how do you think the banks get these massive payout profits in the first place? They massively over charge, i have even been charged for the cost of a letter being sent when it was added as an attachment on internet banking!
I am reclaiming my bank charges & i am proud & if you dont like it tough!!!!!!!!!0 -
it is funny when it only costs the bank a little amount of money yet they charge £30+ they're already making a profit there!
Anyway I didn't deserve my charges I never asked for an overdraft so I do not think I should be getting charged at all when they have let me go overdrawn and then make me pay for it & like everyone else said, you've obviously never had any financial problems well woo hoo for you.

I have never been more incensed than after watching the Bank Charges programme.
I was brought up not to have a cavalier attitude towards the money I had or borrowed - and I know that an unauthorised overdraft WILL incur penalties. Where is the problem?
We are now faced with the prospect of administration charges on well-run accounts while all these herberts are getting their charges refunded.
Not ony that, what happens tomorrow or the next day when my bank share prices fall? Can our money saving expert advise on how to recoup? I think not. Irresponsible broadcasting at its best.0 -

And you all know the truth ...yes the banks make billions, but they have targets and they will keep them .... how ? by reducing or delaying interest, providing less attractive incentives ....... cutting staffing levels, or their availbility on the customer front line.
Those who spend and basically steal the banks money without permission ... and yes it is theft, will not get their money back ...and who will pay for it.
you guessed it ... as always ...those of us with the money, hard earned money i might add.
I agree that those who are few pounds overdrawn at the end of the month should not be rewarded with a £35 letter, and in most cases the bank ignore a few pounds so no problem, but thousands of pounds in charges are caused by those who ignore the banks, take from them and then disregard their advice.
martin you are no better than carol vorderman, i wonder how big your house and bank balance are, brilliant website but you've lost it this time.
Oh Dear me. Its my hard earned money that they have taken and now getting back thanks very much.. If it was justified do you think any of us would of been refunded.. I think not.... It does not cost £35 for an automated letter. The banks know they are in the wrong, so do we, so do the courts and deep down so do you.
I just hope you buy something and see it somewhere else 90% cheaper. And be over charged somewhat.0 -

*rage* against first post! You blinkered i***t! Don't you realise that by banks charging such extortionate amounts for going as little a 1p overdrawn, they're plunging people into more debt, that they will take years to pay off and destroy their lives???? Money isn't GOD you know!'The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes'

I have had a bank account with the same bank for 37 years and if they were to send me a list of all of the charges against me I doubt if they would total more than £200.00.
Why? Because I am rich? Nope Because I am clever? Nope.
Because I was VERY concerned that I would be charged £30.00 for being overdrawn!
It has worked as a deterrant for me and thousands alike. God only knows what the state of this debt ridden country would be, if it weren't for these charges?
Any time I have been charged for inadvertantly going overdrawn I have complained and been refunded. (probably about 10-15 times in total). Not bad considering I was the sole earner bringing up three kids and paying a Mortgage (Paid off now) as I left school with no qualifications and have been self employed for 25 years and therefore entirely responsible for my income EVERY day of my life as opposed to being spoonfed a regular salary whether I felt like working hard or not.
Thanks, but I am glad that I CANNOT claim money back!
OH NO!!! YOU HAVE JUST BEEN LUCKY!!
I can hear it all.
Well if the opposite of being lucky is being careless than I admit it.
