Where to propose in the UK??

Ask her father if you know she'd like this. Otherwise no. Never mind what went down well with other people's proposals, your GF is herself, what works well for one person won't work well for another - it's like thinking all men like football!!
Good idea on the token ring though!0 -
it would be completely pointless if my OH asked my dad first...
im going to marry him no matter what my dad says or thinks on the subject so thats one wedding tradition we are ditching for being completely outdated!
i know of a man who discussed the engagement with the bride to bes father (before he proposed) but actually asking permission?? naaahhh
of course... you know him best and he may LOVE you and say yes....
but what if the old goat says no!! then what? you will more than likely go ahead but with the feeling that your new father in law would rather she was with someone else! who needs that!
its like when your naming a baby, if you tell people/family beforehand the names your thinking of they will always find a reason to talk you out of it ("ohh... i had a ex called that.... ohhh ive never liked that name... what about ....... instead" etc) but if you present them with a newborn baby and say "her name is......" everyone just says "awwwwwwww"0 -
Like everyone else has said it depends on her. But you said she doesnt like to be the center of attention, so make sure its somewhere quiet. Dont have other people around you.
And asking her dad is also a personal preference thing. If my boyfriend asked my dad for permission then they would ADORE him for it and he would gain super brownie points with them. But then your girlfriends family may not be like that (mine are old fasioned).
And great thing about the ring, Id love to be allowed to chose! Just have to drop subtle hints everynow and then. Buy a cheap one (like £20) to do the proposal then announce your taking her shopping!!Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
I think the asking of the Dad for consent is supposed to be a mark of respect.
Like you say, if he did say no I would still want to get married anyway.
Still need to think about this one.
As for the token ring, I think its the safest option. I would like to do it with the real thing, but I would be worried to get it wrong, and deep down she wouldnt really like it.0 -
Are there any beautiful gardens(you know, the sort that are closed in winter and well looked after). Go down on one knee there (women usually all love that..sadly i didnt get that).
Or find out if there is a time due for lots of shooting stars(they know when that is somethimes on astronamy websites). I sat on a park bench watching loads of shooting stars with my OH in a park one night and it was really romantic(didn't rpopse there either!!).
Heres a link if you live near bath! http://visitbath.co.uk/lovebath/places-to-propose
What about go to London and book tea and sandwiches at the Ritz (£36 each and book in advance) and propose over there. They have a piano playing too. That would be dead romantic and she could tell everyone that you proposed to her at the Ritz !! Cool!0 -

My OH tried his best to be romanic... took a romantic walk down the prom and asked my by the sea at sunset. Sadly, it was February, freezing cold, blowing a gale and absolutely chucking it down!!! Still said yes though :rotfl:
Similar here, was 18th Feb, bitterly cold and on West Wittering beachHe'd then booked dinner and a room at a gorgeous hotel local to us, went on to have our wedding reception there
Slightly worn out mum to 3 (DS1 May 03, DS2 Feb 05, DD1 Feb 08). When i grow up i think i'll become a UN Peace keeper....0 -

Don't do what my DH did - propose at home when I've got my head down the loo being sick.
'Tam darling, will you marry me?'
'RRAALLPPHH!!!'
:rotfl:
I maintain I've never been asked, but I accepted a lovely sparkly ring while putting the shopping in the fridge. Never seen another proposal that involved broccoli before!!!
In my next life I'm not marrying a Yorkshireman (unless it's Sean Bean)!!!!

Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...0
