My first throw away of the year. Had to throw away the end of a cucumber that had gone mushy. I reckon on something between 10-15p
I read recently about wrapping cucumber up in foil. I have done that with the latest one and so far it seems to be okNot Rachmaninov

Been shopping today and had to sort out the fridge - ended up chucking out a very wrinkly potato - bought as a pack of 4 for £1 so 25p wasted.
Up to 75p now - still an improvement for me!0 -
just before Christmas I took part in a food waste challenge organised by Recycle London.
The aim was to cut down grocery bills by throwing less stuff away. I learnt some really good tips (like how you can eat the stem bit of broccoli if you peel the outer skin off - it's really good). When I completed the challenge I found I'd saved about £20 off my weekly grocery bill so it was really worthwhile but I sense that I could do more
Have you got any great tips for cutting down food waste? i.e. preserving food, eating things you might normally chuck or compost, buying less but producing more food etc.0 -
As much as I did laugh at the Super Scrimpers programme I did like the tip of slicing and freezing lemons and using them in drinks. I do this if I have lemons I haven't used.0

I chuck clean offcuts from prepping veg (tops, tails, some peelings if clean) and bits not used, into a plastic bag in the freezer. When I have enough I either make a veggie stock in the slow cooker or add them to a chicken bone stock (also in slow cooker)."The things you take for granted somebody else is praying for." - Morgan Freeman0

I often buy celery but it usually goes limp before I can use it all so I put in a freezer bag once it's gone limp and freeze. I do this over several weeks until I've got enough to make a celery soup, some I leave in the fridge for lunches that week and the rest I freeze for lunches later in the month.

Hiya, could I join the 2013 challenge please? Long time lurker so thought I should join in as I hate wasting food. I'd like to try a £5 challenge for what's left of January. I've been doing a weekly shop after checking the cupboards and doing a meal plan and it's cut the waste down by a lot. I had two black bananas in the fridge yesterday so they were chucked in a home made veg curry last night and they really made it sweet and tasty. I also cut up day old breadmaker bread into cubes and put them in the freezer to make homemade stuffing with which is much nicer than bought. Garden birds love fruit past its best too and it's cheaper than bought bird food.:)0

There are lots of tips on these threads that should help:

I'll add this thread to the most recent one later to keep the ideas together.
