Can anyone tell me how to maker proper breadcrumbs? I just end up with lumps of bread

Are you trying to make it with bread that is quite fresh? With shop bought white bread I would say that you would need to leave it a few days. I make wholemeal bread and that crumbs up really easily in a food processor.

I've done well this weekend - haven't thrown a scrap away!
Made double portions of mexican potato bake for tea so I have one in the fridge for the week and made some mash to go with something else (not sure what yet) from the leftover potatoes.

    Total still 50p

Won't they turn to mush that way? Leftover carrots are so versatile, I just stick them into any soup / curry to increase the veg content.

To my shame, I threw out 1/4 of a cucumber the other day - the first time I've thrown food away for months :(

59p :( 50p for 4 apples that I bought from the fruit & veg stall in town before Christmas - they were still in their brown paper bag shoved down behind the fruit bowl :( one was liquid and the others were hairy so they had to go!

The 9p was for an egg that must have cracked on the way home from the supermarket yesterday - didn't realise til this evening so didn't want to risk using it.

DD wanted some cucumber and cheese with her lunch today but didn't touch it so I swiped it off her plate and into a sandwich bag to go into DS1's lunch tomorrow.

Clementine cake was a hit with DH so will send him to work with some tomorrow, along with some carrot & coriander soup and granary rolls I made today. I didn't really like the cake (too moist for me) Might try and turn the rest into some sort of trifle tomorrow.

Got loads of chicken leftover from today's roast - some has gone in DS wrap for his packed lunch (DD doesn't like chicken unless its a nugget!) the rest will be for dinner tomorrow, will cook it with a bit of turmeric and curry powder and have with cous cous and peppers. Will make flatbreads to go with that too.

  • Well I also discovered a cracked egg in the box I bought yesterday, so am counting it with the others that were out of date (BB Boxing Day) as £2.

On the plus side the Dutch apple cake came out really well - there's no way I'd have fancied eating wrinkly apples but peeled, sliced and baked in the cake they were delicious.

Hi, do you do the freshness test for your eggs. I do this with all out of date eggs and have now got 2 left to use with a BBdate of 28th December. So far since 21st December ive thrown away 1 pork chop (a YS product) which i costed at around 22p per pork chop
  • over the weekend we have done very well. we have cut portion sizes so no food left there. Im writing a list of who dislikes what, because
the problem we are having now is food not being eaten because they dont like it, ie ds dosent like suede and carrot so it was thown away and he wasn't in when we dished up . hes not a child so cant make him eat it

still reading through all the posts there have been some really great ideas.

having spag bol tonight so I intend to be careful with the amount of spaghetti i cook i always do way to much any ideas for measuring anyone?
You can if you think you can .

Thanks ImDoingItForMe: I'm not normally squeamish about sell by dates but as I'm 12 weeks pregnant and eggs are a high risk food I'd rather err on the side of caution. ;)
