I freeze lemon and lime slices. I also use up odds and ends in soup. Had about an inch thick (with the rind) piece of stilton, so made broccoli and stilton soup. Delish! I never eat the end crust of bread, but whizz it into breadcrumbs and freeze.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

My veg peelings and trimmings of meat get microwaved in a dish with a little water til really soft, then chopped up and added to the dog's bowl. He also loves apple and pear cores and most other fruit he can beg from me. I don't get much waste food!0

Write a meal plan for the week using anything fresh (ish) in the fridge/cupboard as a starting point.0

I find having a good store cupboard helps to use up odds and ends. Last night I cooked duck legs in cider and chicken stock and today I have a lot a few vegetables, some apple slices and a small amount of duck left. From my store cupboard I'm going to be making duck pasties after making some shortcrust pastry in the food processor.
I also keep bone boxes in my freezer, so the duck leg bones will go in the poultry one (I also have a dark meat one) and when it and my veg peeling box is full, I'll make stock.Grocery budget in 2023 £2279.18/£2700Grocery budget in 2022 £2304.76/£2400Grocery budget in 2021 £2107.86/£2200Grocery budget in 2020 £2193.02/£2160Saving for Christmas 2023 #15 £ 90/ £3650 -
re the celery if you wrap it in tin foil it will keep for several weeks without going 'bendy' at all I have celery in my fridge that I brougfht home from DDs two days after Christmas and its still crisp.Once bendy it gets chopped for soups or stews though so nowt goes in the bin.I have found that the elmlea long-life cream really does last for ages. I've just used the last drop in some coffee that I opened two weeks ago, and has been covered with a tin foil top since being opened0

Ooh also this morning I used up about half a big bag of potatoes that were all sprouty and turned them in to mash, we'll have some of it with tea tonight and the rest will be bagged up for the freezer. I'd normally let potatoes go off and end up throwing them away, but not anymoreSeptember Grocery Challenge £0/£2250

If potatoes are going sprouty, you can peel them, cut into chunks, parboil for about 5 minutes, then freeze them. When you want roasties you just bung them in your roasting tin and cook.
I usually have in my freezer, sandwich bags into which I chop an onion, a carrot and a stalk of celery, then I use them as a base for bolognese, soup etc. It's a good way of saving the veg which is starting to go a bit soft. If I've got any peppers or courgettes which are going a bit over I'll chop and add to a bag too. I keep the bags in an airproof plastic container to stop the whole freezer stinking of onion!0 -
