  • Hi Everyone, I had to throw out a whole pint of milk today, it had been frozen but it didn't look right when I defrosted it so in the bin it went:( But I did put a piece of 'snowman' cheese left over from christmas into a homemade mulligatawny soup yesterday, it was a bit dry but we're all still here :)
The soup was made up with all the stray and odd bits of veg left in the veg drawer and was lovely. So I guess 72p for the milk leaves my balance at £4.28 for the rest of January x

Shake defrosted milk to remix the fats. I use it in white/cheese sauces.
  • Few throw aways to add - 3 plums from a YS punnet 31p for the punnet, about 10 plums in it and I threw away 3 as I was chopping them up to make compote as they had gone yukky, that's 3p. And 1/3 of 1/2 a cucumber which I can't find on my recipts from January so goodness knows when I bought it, estimated 50p for the 1/2 so wasted 16p there.

    Total 0.19/5.00

Good tips on here and I find I am thinking more and using stuff up more now I am tracking the waste :)

  • we are hardly throwing any food away now. since following this thread we are making a real effort to cook a bit less so all gets eaten and to make sure nothing goes of before we have the chance to use it.
it is making such a difference . i think we must have been wasting a few pounds each week mainly by dishing up such big portions which was then being left.
You can if you think you can .
  • Bin day for us today and it as there was hardly anything in it we have left it there for another week! Cannot believe when the last time was we never put a bin out so this challenge is obviously working. I did throw one thing out - a half eaten tub of soft cheese left from Christmas. Couldn't work out what to do with it so it had to go as i'm a bit fussy about out of date dairy stuff. Figured that was 70p worth left so that leaves my month's total as £3.58 :j

She tried, but it broke my heart to hear her say she couldn't get another meal out of that chicken carcass and see go in the bin :(.

I made a pan of broccoli and Stilton soup this afternoon using chicken stock from a carcass, an onion, a huge head of broccoli, 100g ys Stilton and a couple of hg garlic cloves. I used the whole potato inc skin and the peeled broccoli stem (veg peelings go in a bag to cook up for the dog), the only waste was the skin of the onion and garlic cloves. I must find a use for them!

Oh I so need to join this as I'm determined to try to stop chucking food out. Please can you put me down for £5 per month and I'll see how it goes from there.

    Many thanks :)

Depending on how near you are to a!di, i would have taken it back.

Yes, did think of that, but 18 mile round trip and did not want to have to keep the partly cooked gone off rancid smelling meat for a few days until I could get ther again. _pale_
Just had to write off the cost. It's their loss, as I won't be buying mince from Aldi again in a hurry. In fact, our local COOP had an offer, buy 2 x packs of nice mince for £6, so shopped local instead :)
    keep smiling,

Sparrar I agree, as that carcass went in the bin I shouted at the screen "Where's the stock?"! I could have done with that!
Last week we had a small piece of topside from M & S roast for four deal (which was free as I had collected M & S vouchers via the Daily Mail)
I did five roast beef dinners, OH and I had sandwiches for lunch next day, and then we had rissoles and new pots the next day.
Wish the programme makers could interview some of us, we'd show them how to make things stretch!
