Well, I've made jam and chutney and jelly and used my supply of jars. I have also used my supply of ceramic and glass yoghurt pots (very posh french yoghurts and puds come in them).
So now I'm onto my supply of mugs that have been on the top of the kitchen cupboard. I shall wash 'em and once hot from the dishwasher will put the green tomato chutney in them. Then I shall put a wax paper circle (courtesy of cheerio's packet) cellophane lid (courtesy of bunch of flowers) and all sealed with an elastic band (courtesy of the spring onion label).
Now how cheapskate is that.... sorry not cheapskate but OS :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Very OS and well done for being so inventive.
I have, in desperation, used a Nutella jar - the ones that are shaped like drinking glasses and which have plastic lids.
I'm sure I have posted it on this thread but it may be worth asking for jars at your local cafe. Mine saved loads of the little tiny jars that they sell one portion of jam in. I was pleased because this size is just right for the drips at the bottom of the jam pan and they were pleased because they couldn't recycle for some reason and they felt much better if the jars were reused.0 -
I ran out of jars on Tuesday and needed a couple to finish storing a batch of chutney so when I went to Asda I bought a couple more jars of the cheap curry sauce and was horrified to find it has gone up from 4p to 9p.
Now I know we are only talking coppers, and of course I still bought them, but isn't it awful that the price of anything can more than double overnight? Just think if normal priced bread or milk followed suit!
Edit: Sorry, just realised that's a bit OT really.Oh dear, here we go again.0 -

I have just spotted this thread now and want to say thank you for the suggestion to put any unwanted jars on freecycle. I use most of my jars for my spices so I don't have loads of open packets in the cupboard, and i can find what I want easily.
I normally just send all my extra jars to the recycling, now I shall save them up and freecycle them!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...:D:D

There's a cookery shop in Witney that sells empty jam jars for £1.29. No kidding. £1.29.

I'm about to make my first attempt at chutney (keep your fingers crossed for me!!) and read up on it online first - all the sites said i needed expensive jars etc but decided to come to this site because you guys always have the answers that i'm too dense to think of myselfAnyway this post was BRILLIANT - so now i'm going to use my saved jam jars and use waxed paper and cellophane lids - yay!! :j
Thank you M.E.!0 -
I noticed Hobbycraft was selling 4 lids for about 2.99 the other day and various bits such as the cellophane circles with rounds of fabric to pretty up your jars - even Lakeland 'which I find expensive, do the lids cheaper than that - or did, maybe they have gone up with the new trend for 'DIY' I will still use any old jar and lid anyway the flipping stuff gets devoured to fast to put fancy fabric bits on :rotfl:Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Last year we were short of jars for jam, even after asking around friends and on freecycle, so we did a trip round our local supermarket (sainsbugs) to find the cheapest things in jars that we would actually use, as OH is a bit of a snob about some things and wouldn't use the cheapy curry sauce. As a result, we ended up buying a huge load of value honey and mint sauce, and decanting them into very big old mayo jars which were too large to use for jam (which was intended to be given as gifts). We are still finishing the honey!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0
