Not silly at all. I bought jars from Lakeland too for making jam etc as gifts, and bought new lids from there for jars which I was recycling. I never have enough old jars so have to top up with bought ones. I've only been making jams and chutneys for a couple of years, so haven't built up an enormous stash yet, and you inevitably lose most of the jars when you give jams as gifts or to sell at Christmas Fairs etc.
I don't personally like the idea of buying cheap curry sauce etc and throwing it away (we wouldn't eat it) in order to use the jar as it seems really wasteful.0 -
Thanks for the Jamie jam recipe debtmuncher. I think even I can manage to get that one right!Oh dear, here we go again.0

Hely but there is a world of difference between throwing away 4p worth of curry sauce and spending say 99p on a jar of something elseor empty jar ...also try it . you might like it(i know I have been really surprised by some value items) n if you dont I think Sainsburys are doing a get yer money back on basics items if you try n dont like..What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

probably not 99p for 1 jar but i nearly paid £5 inc postage for 6 jars the other day off ebay, which is nearly as bad, as it never occoured to me to buy some cheap jam!! lol
thanks for the tip.. i can be such an idiot sometimes...0 -

Our nearest Sainsburys is an hour's drive away (Tesco is 1.5 hours and Asda is 2hrs, we live in the sticks!).
I wasn't being snobby about the 4p curry sauce, it's just we don't use a lot of ready made sauces etc so I wouldn't be likely to use it whether it cost 9p or £9!
The way I look at buying jam jars is that it is materials for something which I enjoy doing. I enjoy knitting and so will spend money on yarn rather than unpicking old jumpers to make new stuff. I get a lot of my jam and chutney ingredients for free from friends' and family's gardens, so I don't mind the outlay on jars from time to time. I also buy the nice little sticky labels from Lakeland with pictures of fruit on, and buy material to make little hats for the jars, which I know is completely un-necessary but I like the look of them that way...0 -

I have to confess that I bought some value pasta sauce from Tesco for the jar but it turns out that if you add an onion and a tin of tomatoes, the sauce is quite acceptable. I do mostly make my own but sometimes we have more for a meal than expected, or they have to have them early ....0

I wouldn`t buy an empty jam jar. I have been tempted though to buy up a few of these jars of fruit...

I wouldn`t normally pay that price just for fruit but I have my eye on the empty jars for organising my kitchen pantry and they look great for beans/pulses etc and workout cheaper than buying lock and lock of similar size.0 -
