I did feel bad to throw them though, they gleamed so nicely (sigh) Yes, I know I am sad. :-)
hi bilberry
sorry for the poor typing i have burnt my hand
don't be put off freecycle - you do get some stupid people but no more so that in any other situation and you don't have to give or take freom someone if you aren't sure about them. i set uoa a separate email address for my freecycle e,ails.
i have met some lovely people on our local freecycle. someone saved some jars for me and another gave me loads of fruit and i gave them both some hm jam and marmalade which they were delighted with xx0 -

Sorry to hear about the poorly hand, I hope it is less painful soon. It sounds as though you have had nice experiences with freecycle, which seemed to be the original intention, thank you. :-)The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -
I wonder if it's worth asking at any charity shops, whether or not there's a call for clean jamjars.
Very often the ladies who work in them either make jam/preseves or would perhaps know somebody who does - perhaps even a couple of customers.0 -
Cant believe the amount of people 'throwing away' whats in the cheapie jars. I just think thats wrong, and also 'creates a demand' where there isnt one, really. Starving hungry people in the world would be so shocked at this waste; Id at least stick it in the freezer in case I thought of something to use it for...like mixing jam in with plain ice cream or something.''A moment's thinking is an hour in words.'' -Thomas Hood0

I've stuck notices up at work and asked my friends to let me have any jars (with lids!) that they are about to get rid of. I have gifted some jams to people who have given me jars. I also tell people that I need the jars back when they have used the contents!
DH's boss gets posh jars and I have noticed that a few of the jars that are coming through have no markings on the lids. Now I have a dishwasher I am finding that the labels are coming off easier. DH is able to get the little lables from work (you know the type that are used for adress labels?) and as I only ever need a sheet at a time there's no point me ordering them by the box.
His boss is always given at least one jar of what we make as he provides lots of jars for us, he has given us free range of his gardens and woodland to collect fruit, and he lets us have free labels!
Over time I expect that I will whittle the jars down to the really nice ones. I was looking in the cupboard today and planning next year. I have a collection of different size and shape jars so I will try to make each batch using one type of jars.
Did buy an asda jar that looked like a kilner jar but I can't remove the rubber bit. Boooooooh! Not sure how I will sterilise that one. I may return it and say that I can't use it for the purpose it's intended for or something?Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
On a similar note, if you make sloe gin, home-made fruit syrups etc. or flavoured oils or vinegars for Xmas presents, keep an eye out for Farchioni Il Cassolari olive oil in Sainsbury's. The oil is really good quality and when the bottle is finished you can wash off the label and you have a 1 litre bottle with a rubber sealed stopper and flip-top wire closure, which you would pay probably £2 or more for in the shops.0
