As to the jam jars eek at 99p, the school my little one goes to does a weird raffle where kids decorate jam jars and fill them with sweets/mini toys or similar for the xmas fair... maybe I should clean up some jars and put them in the shop nearer the time and see if anyone is daft enough!!!

Sounds like what my DS's cubs are doing next Saturday! I'm donating three jars of stuff - but I'm not using my jam jars, just the ones which had stuff like curry sauce in. (I do buy curry sauce because I'm pants at making curry - it never tastes of much!!! :rotfl:)

On a similar note, if you make sloe gin, home-made fruit syrups etc. or flavoured oils or vinegars for Xmas presents, keep an eye out for Farchioni Il Cassolari olive oil in Sainsbury's. The oil is really good quality and when the bottle is finished you can wash off the label and you have a 1 litre bottle with a rubber sealed stopper and flip-top wire closure, which you would pay probably £2 or more for in the shops.

Thank you Thnak you Thank you...... Have been looking everywhere for some nice bottles for my sloe gin (damson gin too) and didn't want to spend a fortune....

    Sainsburys for me

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)

I was in a rather posh kitchenware shop today in Burford (village in Gloucestershire) and they were selling empty jam jars for about £2.50!! Fairly bog-standard ones they were too, nothing special about them. I can't understand why someone wouldn't go to Lidl and buy lots of cheap jam, even if they threw away the contents (which would be madness but just hypothetically speaking) it'd still be a fifth of the price.
  • i would buy basic curry sauce from saisbury and chuck the contents

I was thinking "I wonder how much the jar on its own actually costs" when I was buying the 5p jars of curry sauce (or 4p). I wouldn't dream of throwing away the curry sauce - I live on the stuff.

I wonder if it's worth asking at any charity shops, whether or not there's a call for clean jamjars.

Very often the ladies who work in them either make jam/preseves or would perhaps know somebody who does - perhaps even a couple of customers.
Now that never occurred to me, I always seem to have my stoopid head on these days, but what a good idea. We regularly take in bits and bobs, especially books, but will ask if they can take in jam jars, thanks. :-)

    Speakin of jam...
If you go and by the cheap jars..don't throw the jam away. For example you can make Spring roll sauce with apricot jam...
Add minced shallot, saute until fragrant. Add Hoisin sauce, apricot jam and water. or
    Spicy Orange Sauce:
    4 cups apricot jam
    2 cups rice vinegar
    4 cups orange juice
    2 tablespoons ginger (minced)
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes

(this goes great with duck, pork or chicken)

Look on ebay or car boots too.

I need some jars at the moment, and hadn't though of freecycle - thanks.

Thing is I need bigger than normal jam jar size - perhaps more like a nescafe size jar... Only we don't buy this coffee lol

What it is - I want to make my brother and sister a jar of 'retro' sweets for christmas on a budget but don't want to have to spend too much!

    Anybody have any ideas please?
  • Both Asda and Tesco have hexagon shaped jars with silver lids for 95p each. They are large enough to hold a 1kg bag of sugar with room for about another 300g on top and I use them for all kinds of things. They are too big (and also wouldn't be suitable) for jam, but last year I bought loads and loads of them and filled them with cookies, sweets, hm bath salts, cake mixes and so on to give as presents and they were lovely. I put fabric circles over the lids and tied with ribbon and they looked really expensive. I have about 12 of them lined up on my kitchen worktop with coffee, tea, sugar, sultanas, hot choc powder etc in and they look really trendy.
