Term Time Holidays???

We've never done it. Can't see the point of having to put the kids in a position of catching up, when it's avoidable.0

Suggests that term-time holidays are the second-most common reason for school absence. Therefore, if there is a link between absence and attainment in general, then there must also be a link between term-time holidays and attainment.
the most flawed logic Ive ever seen. I sincerely hope that you are not one of the people who are teaching our children :rotfl:0 -

The TES is hardly an unbiased source either, so I'm not so sure we can rely on those figures.
I didn't see them quote where the figures came from. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -

or how many days have been lost to sickness (the highest reason for term-time absence, according to that article).
eta - I have no problem at all with the "what to do" pointers at the end of that article, makes perfect sense to me.0 -
Please do not take them out of term time. It's the only time people that are pre-breeding, or now have independent children can guarantee a peaceful holiday.
Nothing worse than a loud mouthed family screeching for an out of control Chardonnay and Tyson around the hotel.

I also disagree with the way prices are hiked during holiday time, the free child places are a non event, the kids take up a seat each on the plane, need a bed each in the hotel (a bit of a saving here), and expect to be fed, and often entertained at Kiddy Klub (extra costs here). so just charge for the number of people.0 -
Then maybe you should have picked a different career? Last time I checked we were all able to choose our own professions.
Maybe that should be remembered next time (and there is always a next time!) someone is comparing teachers' supposedly cushy job with their own and bleating about how much harder they work than teachers!!!!!!
It works both ways!!0 -
Why not go away at Easter or one of the half terms - prices don't rocket so much then.0

A few points
1) I know in the school bubble being a teacher carries some kind of authority, however beyond the impressionable 4 year old's it takes much more to influence others.
2) they aint your kids therefore it is nothing to do with you
3) Teachers despite what they may think are not experts on kids / parenting nor are they lifestyle coaches and advisers.
4) Teachers should avoid commenting on parents taking their kids out of school in term times for financial reasons given that they are more than happy to disrupt my child's education for fun and profit when it suits.
5) It is your job, hence why you are expected there. The last time I looked my child was not paid to go to school

Hmmm....so when little Johnny is behind with his coursework due to being on some beach for 2 weeks and then comes back totally lost....who then has to fill in the missing pieces most likely in their own time after school/lunchtime?
When little Johnny is lost in class due to being away - does this take away time from the other kids who have been there (whilst little Johnny sits on a beach) as little Johnny needs more teacher help to catch up?
Hmmm.....holidays in term time do cause disruption to the child (and their learning), the teacher and more importantly, other children in the class (who's time is taken away by the child rejoining the class after a period of absence).
If you look at a register of pupils, the ones that tend to be the brightest will have a near 100% attendance rate - like it or not!0 -
What "catching up" and missing coursework? The kids in question are in primary school. I don't agree that secondary school aged children should miss any school for a holiday, but in primary school (and a one-off) I don't see the problem personally, if the school give permission.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244
