Term Time Holidays???

Have children of 8 & 10, I have never taken them out of school for a holiday before.
We have only ever holidayed in the UK, because that's all we could afford, mostly with relatives.
This year we could stretch to a holiday in the sun abroad, but only if it's in term time, its going to be approx £600-700 more in the school holidays and we just can't stretch to that.
I want them to experience going on a plane, seeing a foreign country, sampling the food etc and to do so whilst they are still young enough to enjoy it as a family (before the teenage years hit and mum & dad are not cool!).
Am only considering this as they are still in primary school and they do have excellent attendance, most terms get the 100% or Excellent Attendance award.
Any thoughts?

What are your school's views on term time holidays?
When my children were at school, I used to take them away during term time but I think it is a lot stricter now.
I think the first thing would be to see what the school say. If they are willing to allow, there isn't an issue.
I know some families go anyway and accept the fine as that is still cheaper. The only thing I wouldn't suggest is getting your children to lie by saying they were ill or something like that. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. Why not ask the school for their take on the situation? Some will avidly follow the rules, report to the LEA and you could find yourself being fined for each child's absence.
Other schools are more relaxed - especially if the children are working well above the average and who do not have an adverse absence record.0 -
DD/DS's school are fairly relaxed. I know quite alot of children who have been taken on holiday during term time, we did it ourselves for the first time back in January for 3 days, and in fact the headmaster signed their passport photos and forms! I don't know anyone in RL who has had a problem with their school being funny about it, but anecdotally on here I have read about people being fined. The fine is usually considerably less than the savings you would make by taking your children on a term time holiday though
.
JxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
My view (as a teacher) is this: how would you feel if the teachers did as you describe? Do you not think we would like to benefit from the lower term-time prices too?0
