Lilyplonk, we are having the same problem with our chest freezer in the utility room, please let me know how you get on.

Hope you are settling in ok after your move.

Hi Becky - we finally tackled the ice on the small chest freezer yesterday evening. Here's how we got on -

    • Turned it off at the socket.
    • Lots of microfibre cloths to hand and then blasted around the back hinges with the Steamer - mine's a Polti so good pressure.
    • It had travelled further than I'd first reckoned - down behind the 'grill guard thingy'.
    • Gave the whole thing a thorough drying - including inside the 'cavity at the back' just in case any melting water had got inside there.
    • Mopped up the porch floor :o,
    • Switched back on again at arm's length ;).
Whole process took around half an hour, so I knew contents would be safe switched off for that length of time.

However, after all that, this morning the ice is re-forming :(.

I'm not sure what's causing the problem. It could be any one of a number of things - or a combination of them all:

    • Freezer is around 20yrs old!
    • There's screws missing from the hinges and the lid doesn't fit 'tight'.
    • It's recently been moved - and I know that these things resent being re-sited!
    • The porch is darn cold - ambient operating temperature? - would that cause a problem - who knows!
Basically, I need a new one! Or at least 'new to me' - but then again you only end up inheriting somebody else's problems!

There was just what I need on ArgosTV a couple of weeks ago for £139, and I knew at the time that I should have ordered it .

Best of Luck with yours :) - Lilyplonk x
  • Think I need to join in here for a bit, I'm inbetween jobs at the moment and taking the opportunity to totally declutter the house and actually find everything a home!

How do you deal with a (mildly) uncooperative OH? He's pleased that I'm doing it all but a bit reluctant to chuck stuff, a few of his old t-shirts got liberated last night, plain ones and he still had nearly 40 of them!

    Anyway, today's jobs -

    1. Brewing stuff cupboard - can't really chuck stuff but can tidy it up so I can fit other things in there
    2. Bedside tables, no idea how much rubbish in there.
    3. Shoes in hall. Not looking forward to this, expecting spiders!
    4. Recycle 2 bags of bottles
    5. Put old tenant's post back in postbox (there's quite a bit of this, I just haven't been bothered to write on all the envelopes yet)
    6. Bag up some more old clothes for Cash 4 Clothes

Sure there's more, but I think that's enough to get on with...

:hello: and welcome to decluttering, PolkaDots!

Getting your OH on board isn't always easy - mine is a complete hoarder and needs his asre kicking most of the time. But I'm luckier than most - we don't live together all the time. He has his own place which comes in very useful when it comes to issuing 'threats'. Last week, he swore that he only had 2prs of jeans - by the time we'd unpacked all his clothes from the moving stuff, there were 8prs hanging up in his wardrobe, another pair being worn and 2 more pairs in the charity shop bag !!!!! I have threatened to get stuck into his t-shirt hoard if he doesn't tackle it himself .......................

His problem is that he's got a friend who's a market trader and often gets really good quality second-hand designer clothes to sell OR warehouse joblots. Any that he thinks OH will like, he'll keep to one side and they end up here .................. In return OH 'does music/films' for him

I often have a total melt-down with 'If YOU want to keep it so much, then it can go to YOUR flat!'.

I know, I know - not very nice of me :o - BUT he has so many 'collections' that I don't see why I should be paying full rent to house his collections when my home is so over-cluttered and his place is sparse .

For the time being, just lead by example and give a very 'I-told-you-so-smirk' when he's having trouble finding something.

Good Luck and Happy Decluttering - Lilyplonk :)
  • Lilyplonk glad you found a solution to your curtain end stop issue.

So far today (a unexpectedly having to hang around the house for a little while this morning):-

    * one pair shorts (never really fitted or looked nice, why did I buy them??!)

    * three plastic beakers that I've had since the boys were little - they're now 20 and 17!!

Now, what else can I find ...
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

Looking back at the issue of the charity shop being broken into -

In ours we've got a couple of known shop-lifters and a couple of others who are 'highly suspect'.

We have a tendency to follow them around the shop, being overly-chatty, suggesting alternatives to them when they look hesitant about wanting something - which is often a sign of dodgy activity, talking loudly among ourselves about how disgusting it is that charity shoplifting is like stealing from those who have absolutely nothing at all.

Most of the profits from 'our shop' go to well-digging projects in African countries where people don't have access to clean water - you don't get much poorer than that! The remaining profits - a very small proportion of the overall figure raised - goes to local charities nominated by the shop volunteers and regular customers. We do not have any paid workers of any kind - even our Shop Manager is a volunteer and we are governed by a 'Board of Trustees from all the local churches'. Our Treasurer is a retired Bank Manager, who can prepare the accounts to such a level that the Accountant hardly has anything to do before they're capable of being submitted to the Charity Commission.

    My morning declutter total today:

2 swimming costumes (couple of others probably could go, will wear them once and see how they look)
    Toiletry set
    Handbag
    3 necklaces
2 unused lotions (will take to knitting group raffle tomorrow)
    Santa toy

Also used up 2 lots of bath stuff, however not counting these as won a new set of 3 at the knitting group raffle last week. Think we all just swap our tat around there really!

First day at home this week, so todays challenge for me is to remove five things from each room in the house for either bin, sale or recycling.
