That's a hard one, km1977 - think you need to sit the boys down for a SERIOUS chat to get them 'on side'.

Maybe if they see you making a list for yourself, then they may take more kindly to being asked to do some things around the place.

Tell them you're embarrassed by the way things are at the moment, and that you realise that they probably are as well. Remind them that you ALL have to live there, and it needs to be a joint effort.

Baby steps - try NOT to look at the house as a 'whole' - concentrate on one small area at a time. What about starting with the kitchen area - make it so you can easily prep food, cook safely, eat etc. Make sure that clothes get sorted out of the laundry and taken into the individual bedrooms.

Maybe if you 'help/show them how to' initially sort their bedrooms, they might then be able to keep them tidy for themselves.

Best of Luck - teenage boys who are happy to life in their own mess, can be a right pain in the a$re - I had two myself. They are now both 'tidy freaks' and quite good cooks - so there IS light at the end of the tunnel.
  • I agree with Lilyplonk.

We have a 2014 Decluttering thread now, which is very active, so have a read of that.
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.
