My decluttering will start again soon as I have decided to move back up north by this time next year. Yes, I know I have just had a lovely bedroom made but this idea has been developing in the back of my mind since late last year.

So... bit by bit and piece by piece and cupboard by cupboard I will be streamlining the possessions and making decisions about what to take. With my ruthless hat on I hope it won't be too much.

Actually this process will focus my mind quite sharply on what is important in my/our lives (material wise) and what it not worth having a moving company load up and trawl 200 miles.

So far - chucked out three forks and two knives which didn't survive the dishwasher too well. Small start but at least a start.

I am still reading this thread and always amazed at the efforts being made by those posting here. Some large amounts of stuff being moved out though even the small amounts are inspiring me - hence the five pieces of cutlery!

Good morning all  - wow another lovely clear day but we've got some ground-frost to go with it. I'm sure it'll clear later on though ............... :).

flyingmamma - great to hear from you and Freya and good to know that you're taking 'full advantage' of your OH's paternity leave. I'm sure he's enjoying this very precious time with the family as you all settle back down again. It's quite a few years since we had a 'tiny baby' around (dgs3 - 5yrs ago!) - but do well remember the 'stuff and chaos' that accompanies them. I'm sure we've all laughed our socks off at the AbFab episode where Edina's friend visits with OH and baby .................. :rotfl:.

ziggy - sorry to hear that you can't 'shake off that damn dog'. My DD takes 'hers' for a long walk whenever he re-enters her life ................ it works for her :j. Hope yours gets the message and leaves you alone for a while ((((HUGS)))).

Newly retired - I've been in a similar position to your OH. Retired last July and moved house in Dec. I've also 'decluttered' 23yrs of paperwork - personal AND work stuff. While working, I had an office in my home and it had taken over completely. Work hadn't helped very much, as whenever I requested 'Confidential Waste' I was told that they would 'need to collect' but never did. Our local authority doesn't allow shredded paper in the recycling bin - it has to go into Garden Waste Materials - and, of course, they don't collect from Nov onwards ....................... I thought I'd dealt with it all till I came across 25yrs of wage slips - about 15yrs of these were weekly ones  - plus the bank statements from the same period of time. I'm sure the day will come when you no longer hear the 'dreaded shredder' whirring away ....................

Florenceem - thanks for that. He does go to some kind of 'special dentist' though I've never actually been there when DD has had to take him. I stay with dgd 1 and 2. I hadn't heard of GDD before, so needed to 'google'. Your DD certainly has a lot to contend with. Dgs1 has ASD/ADHD/Dyspraxia/Dyslexia and that is quite bad enough - so all power to your DD for what she and her son go through.

Well done :T to everybody else on your progesss and motivation.

I'm afraid that we didn't get around to assembling the shelves last night. OH is really down with the 'dreaded lurgy' at the moment, so there was no point in trying to dig him out from under the duvet .................. - and, naturally, that was my excuse to sit on my backside and watch the soaps :o. After another day of child-minding, I was ready for it.

I've got the Charity Shop this morning, so have found some more 'stuff' to shift out to them. I took the glass containers yesterday morning - and think they attracted attention immediately.

I had to cancel my session at the gym yesterday, so am planning to go this afternoon as I haven't been recently and I'm paying a membership subscription. Totally money-wasting unless I use the darn thing ................ I've bought some fresh salad stuff, so planning on us both having a salad for evening meal. OH will have some HM Soup during the day while I'm out.

I can't envisage much decluttering getting done here today - but, no doubt, there'll be plenty of it to do in the CS :rotfl:. I do promise NOT to come back home with anything to add to my 'stuff' :A.

    Commitment for this evening -
    • Assemble the book-shelves, position in living room and fill with books from more of the boxes.
    • Assemble the metal shelving and position in outside lock-up.
I'll call back in again later this evening. Have a good day everybody - love Lilyplonk xx

Day indoors yesterday. Carried on decluttering the GH & managed to sort out some of the thousands of photos I've got. Binned LOADS of nondescript & wonky shots (what was I keeping them for?) which made room to get the albums in nice & tidy.
Swapped a cupboard round with a small filing cabinet & discovered I had a 2 gang socket on the wall I'd forgotten 'cos it was hidden - so decluttered the extension lead too.
GH is getting there - if slowly ;)

  • Hi everyone

Had a few days tidying and sorting out more stuff.

Several more things gone via Gumtree, and more stuff sorted for CS and recycling in the bin.

I posted an item on Gumtree as 'free to good home', it has been more trouble than anything I've tried to sell! Three no shows and someone wanted me to deliver miles away! I can't decide whether to re-post it for sale or just bin it (can't take to local CS as it's electrical) there's nothing wrong with it and there's very little resale value I just don't want it anymore and it seemed wrong to just throw it away.

Anyway moan over, off to pick kids up then I can get sorting again this afternoon.

    See you all later.

  • Hi everyone! I've not been around for ages and ages - so feel like the clutter is definitely back up to the annoyance level. Not that it ever got very far below it tbh. Need to get back into decluttering so it starts today! Except for the dehumidifier that's being dropped off this afternoon and the coat hooks I'm picking up. Oh, and the new pair of trousers I need for the gym! But on the other hand, I'm posting two books I've sold through Amazon, and have a couple more to put in the cs bag. So I think it evens out.

I'm also off this weekend, so wondering whether to just have a binge on the decluttering then instead of doing anything else!
  • Hi all

I'm a newbie but an old time Flylady girl. I haven't read the entire thread but I'm wondering if I'm on the right tack when I ask:

Is the idea of thread to write down our decluttering goals?

I have a few small ones set for my weekend ahead

My 4 year olds toys and books
The top of my fridge ( a real breeding ground for my DP's items/tools)
    My cleaning stuff cupboard
The inside of my fridge (lots of jars, dressings from yesteryear)

Am I on the right track. Is this the place I can make a committment to the things that are cluttering up my house and annoying the pants off me?

Please say it is so :j:

  • A late good morning to everyone.
Today I decided to change things round a bit. Instead of spending time on the computer first, I thought I would do my decluttering first.

Washing machine on, then out on line. It is a windy day.
Breakfast dishes done so a clear sink.

Job of the day = sort out my double cupboard in the kitchen that holds trays, dishes and baking tins.

I have emptied my 2 kitchen swing bins. x1 household and x1 recycle.

I took everything out of the cupboard. Binned an old cake tin that was showing signs of rust. A coffee percolator (old), some ice cream tubs. Kept just 1. I like to put food give aways in them. It saves parting with my lock and lock boxes(and hoping to get them returned). Few other bits and bobs.

Then I moved on to the kitchen drawer with things like can openers, spatulas. scissors, etc....

In the end had x2 black bags for the bin.Just old stuff and unloved. No good for CS.

I have done my hand washing, now on line = 2 items that run in the wash.

With all this tidying and decluttering it is bringing to light items I have not seen/used in a wile.
Even Oh said today, where had the 2 travel mugs come from? = back of the cupboard.

It's a kind of motivator if that makes sense. It helps to read what other people are doing and giving you the 'push' to commit to declutter. I have been doing bits over the weeks, but mine is more of a necessity because we are moving home this year - a 300 mile relocation and we cannot be moving crap with us because space in the removal van is going to be at a premium.

For others it's a case of clearing out stuff that has accumulated over the years to such an extent that it has taken over entire room(s) of their homes. Generally, the less you have the more space and the tidier and cleaner your home will be. So, if you get your goals written down whether at home or on here - or both - then you are halfway there to motivating yourself to a decluttered life!! Its up to you how you want to do it :)

Today, although I have cleaned the house through I have gone through my hosiery drawer and threw out some old tights and stockings that are past their best.

    Still to do:-
    Shed
Loft (books from loft dealt with so it is coming down)
Garden tidy up and sort through pots

    Done
    Garage
    Study (all paperwork etc)
    Bathroom
    Kitchen
    All drawers in bedrooms

Remainder of the house all cleared out and sorted.
Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money :D
