Please could someone give me permission to chuck the odd socks. I'm now up to 46 :-(
    Yes!
You can put them in a bag and mark it rag bag and donate to a charity shop. They then sell the fabric by weight.
Just think how much they're getting in the way :j
    Best of luck :)

  • Opportunities for de-cluttering have been minimal over the last few days as I've had to work extra shifts to cover for those who are unable to get in because of the weather. Fortunately I've still managed to add a few bits to the CS bag as I've come across them - 2 more DVD's, a spare pan, a leotard and 3 more unopened bottles of body lotion - so I don't feel like I've totally stopped. Naturally, as we go along there's less left to clear - especially if I manage to resist the urge to buy, and thereby 'reclutter' the place. We're hoping to get some newer, smaller, furniture soon so that should help to make the place look less cluttered. Trouble is, it will de-clutter our bank account too :o.

  • Another productive couple of hours decluttering. Front room almost back to normal. Can finally move around my bed freely! Stuff now in loft that needing going there. 5 boxes into garage for ebay/ carboot. Am sure most of the stationery in the house is now in the stationery base i have set up which is an achievement!

Leaky loo finally fixed today by neighbour.

I have sorted out quite a bit of junk to go - but at the moment it is still here, clogging the place up and making it more untidy than it was before I started

Pile of books #1 - for CS

Pile of books #2 - for DD2 to sort through, as non fiction, and linked to the subjects she teaches. What she doesn't take, can also go to CS

DVD box set that I think my brother must have left here ages ago, not our taste - CS

Victorian / Edwardian part dinner service - still thinking about that, probably CS. It isn't worth much and packing / posting would be a nightmare, even if it did sell on ebay. It is pretty, but I have far too much china  I really need to get rid of a lot more as well :o

Fake Chinese ginger jar thing, quite pretty but not my taste, no idea where it came from - CS

Small box of old spoons and rubbishy costume jewellery - CS

Now all over the living room in boxes :(

Still, I will hopefully get rid tomorrow, snow permitting.

I don't know where this originally came from, because I got it from a little book of my great Aunt's that Mum was going to throw out after she died about 20 years ago, one of those note books where you write or stick recipes. Probably came from a magazine in the 1950s!

Grease and line a 1lb loaf tin (I told you it was old! But Lakeland have them - I am sure you could use another shaped tin, but it is handy for all kinds of cakes)

    Set oven to 350 f (180c) or gas 4

Beat together 4 oz softened butter or margarine (I use the St*rk stuff in tubs for most cakes) 6oz self raising flour, 6 oz sugar, 2 eggs, 4 tablespoons of milk and the grated zest of a lemon for 2 minutes. I used the Kenwood, but I remember auntie with her wooden spoon, and being allowed to lick it :)

Spoon into the loaf tin, smooth top and bake in oven for about an hour till golden, well risen and cooked through. Loosen the edges of the cake from the tin, mix the juice of the lemon with 3 tablespoons of sifted icing sugar and spoon over the hot cake in the tin. Then sprinkle with a little granulated sugar to make the top crunchy.

Leave in the tin till cold, then turn out and slice.

4oz, for people who are younger than me (or my auntie) is about 115 g, and 6 oz is 175g.

Easy and cheap - hope you like it x

    sounds amazing thank you x

Have read a couple of posts from people feeling they havent done much. Decluttering isnt just about getting rid of stuff, it is also about organising stuff we want to keep so well done to those of you who have been doing this. You might prefer to set weekly targets of straightening out one area. And i dont mean a whole room, more a drawer or chest of drawers. Just think, in one year that would be 52 areas :-)

That's so true, in fact I think decluttering is an on going lifestyle choice. Things always come into the house, so those new things have to be organised, and a place found for them. So old things have to be moved around, or moved out of the house to make room.

I've listed below the things that have left the house this week. Although it's not a long list, the packaging materials that left the house wereespecially pleasing as I had been saving far to many jiffy bags and cardboard boxes .

    53 Old cinematickets - recycle
54 Old pass cardfrom previous job - bin
55 Attachments toan old camera – eBay
    56 Plastic coathangers – recycle
    57 Assortedpackaging materials – recycling
    58 Old towels –clothing bank
    59 Book –Greenmetropolis
    60 Cardigan – eBay
    61 Batch of 70singles – eBay
    62 2 Jigsaws -eBay
63 Batch of 45 postcards- eBay

I'm really enjoying reading about everyones efforts, we're all doing really well.

In my sights this week is a box of paperwork with a load of admin that I did when my parents died in 2004 and 2008. It's time for that to go!

Hopefully OH will take the 8 bags of decluttered items from this week to the charity shop, I've asked him to go to a different one this week, feel like we've sent too much to one.

We tend to take most of ours to the same shop, mainly because OH can park right outside their back door, and take the boxes and bags straight in, but if we have any to take when we're going to A1di we take it to a different one, as we can park quite close to that one too.

I tend to keep the odd socks for a while, and then put them in the rag bag for CS. I had a few pairs of OH's socks to sew, which I did this morning, and somehow found an odd one amongst them, I will look for its other half tomorrow but if I can't find it, that one will be in the rag bag too.

When he lived at home my DS was forever ordering stuff online, and we kept the jiffy bags for ebaying (although I didn't start ebaying until after he left home), and we ended up with about 3 bin bags full of them! Having said that, when I did start selling they did all go, and I ended up having to ask for some more on freecycle, as I didn't want to have to pay for new ones. They are now stored in the shed with all my other packaging stuff, so at least they are not in the way.

Thanks for the get well messages for my dad, I really appreciate it. He’s mostly been ok in himself and keen to get home, but on Wednesday I had a bit of a scare, as he had a high temperature and seemed delirious, was very weak and couldn’t even get out of bed. He was so bad, OH and I were convinced that we were watching him die, so we were reluctant to leave him, but finally left at about 9pm, as he was tired and wouldn’t go to sleep until we left. When I phoned to check on him the next day, I told the nurse of our fears and she reassured me that he was fine. She said he was much better, his temperature was down, and he was sitting in his chair waiting for his breakfast.

They did some blood tests later, which showed that he had another infection, so they have put him on another course of antibiotics and he will be kept in until at least Monday or Tuesday, but I’m hoping they will keep him in until the snow has gone, as it’s almost impossible for us to get to the hospital to collect him, and I certainly don’t want them sending him home in an ambulance wearing just his nightwear!

The snow has been falling steadily all day here, and shows no signs of stopping any time soon, so I’m dreading going out to work tomorrow, and unfortunately for me I only work 10 mins walk away (although more like 30 mins in the snow) so I have no excuse for not going in, apart from the fact that getting down our road is like going down a ski slope in this weather, as it’s on a hill and doesn’t get gritted! OH is going to get the bus if they are running, as he doesn’t want to risk taking the car!

Anyway, back on topic, another lazy day here, although I have done 2 loads of washing, mended about 8 pairs of OH’s socks and did some shredding. We also decluttered some packs of crisps left over from Christmas!

I am working in the morning, and have no plans to go anywhere in the afternoon, so hopefully I will get something done then.

Big hugs to you Sue14, I hope your Dad feels better very soon x

I've put 6 books and a framed picture into the charity bag just now.

I've thrown out 5 nail polishes that I never use and are just cluttering up my dresser. I've put a brand new body scrub and body lotion in the charity bag because I don't like the scent.

I also cleared out the bathroom medicine cabinet. EUGH! It was filthy in there! I didn't throw out much but added some painkillers etc that were floating around the house and re-organised it (and cleaned it of course)
    :)
