Yes santer, but it's that Uninstall that does nothing.

just did it again - egg timer for about 20 secs, then back to status quo. Have tried this over 40 times now.
p.s. to William and anyone who may read this - all cartridges ARE new, full. I print photos and documents most days.

Sorry, just noticed that

You could set a restore point, then go to devices and printers, right click it and click remove device.

Then go to programme files and delete the Epson folders, leave them in the recycle bin, restart the machine, then try the installer, either from the original CD or from files downloaded from the Epson site.

Oh santer - I know you've come to my rescue before and I am indeed grateful again.
In fact, some of your Great Mind thinking might be rubbing off on me, as I'd just had a little old lady moment[64 in a fortnight:-)]thinking about a Restore point.
Haven't actually checked Recycle bin, so will do that now...
Nothing in there but old ebay pics and some duplicated recipes, so clearly nothing has happened.

If you click start, computer, local disc C then programme files, can you see Epson folders there? If so, they can be deleted, leaving them in the recycle bin is handy as you will only need to restore them from the bin if something goes wrong.

If you do find and delete Epson folder(s) from programme files, then restart the machine before trying to install the printer again.

If you have Windows 7 it will give a link to click for how to install the inbox drivers for the printer

" Inbox drivers are supplied with the operating system and can be installed via the Windows 7 Add Printer wizard. If a Download driver is also available, we recommend downloading the latest driver from the Epson website and installing it in preference to the Inbox driver. "

If you use the inbox drivers, check the scanner works, if not, choose XP 32 bit as the opersting system, then download and install Epson Scan 2.7U - 02/10/2006

Thanked and Replied earlier santer, but post disappeared and keyboard has been more troublesome than usual, with sulks. I have to remove/replug the lilac plug at back of big box every time before start-up in hope of keyboard light illuminating.

As it happens, I guessed at this - 'choose XP 32 bit' - and did it yesterday. But there were 10 elements to download.
The small ikon appeared at bottom of page, with 'new hardware?/program? detected' and I followed instructions, but things stopped, error 404 came and whole lot closed down.
I've followed your link again now, with only 3 elements to add. First 2 said 'already installed'.
3rd went through 'repairing', rather than 'installing', which suggests to me a resumption and correction from stopping point yesterday,
However, test printing brings up fax Wizard startpage only! - and fax has never worked on this before, nor has scanning for that matter.

What next please? Printer ikon is still not back at foot of page.

If you go to devices and printers, is it listed there, and as the default printer?

Epson chat is worth a go, though it is only open monday to friday, office hours. If you do use their chat, do not mention compatibles, if they ask say genuine and the cartridges have Black T0551 - Cyan T0552 - Magenta T0553 - Yellow T0554 on them.

Hello santer,
I've been trying this all over again since 6 this morning. This is what I have done :

Removed all Epson anythings from programs.
Re-installed from your first link above.

So far, so good until this grey box entitled Files Needed:appears:

The File EE291__1.ICM on EPSON Stylus Photo RX420Series is needed.
Type the path where the file is located and then click OK.

Sorry santer, but I don't understand this instruction and no, nothing is listed in printers and faxes[mine does not have your wording. 'devices and printers'. I'm assuming they equate.]

If you are using Windows XP

Download the driver (5.5b) from here.

Use win zip or similar to extract the files to a folder, don't click the file to run it as this starts the Epson installer.

Open the folder winzip creates, look for the EE291__1.ICM file, if you see it, close the folder.

Run the epson installation until it gets to asking about the EE291 file, then type the path to the folder, or click browse if that is an option

If you have not got winzip, use 7 zip from here

Right click the epson 5.5b folder, look for 7zip in the list. click that, then click extract to epson 18706eu
