In my slow cooker today:
An inch of water, a roughly sliced onion and a couple of carrots, pepper and a beef stock cube. Beef brisket sat on top and cooked on slow for about 7 hours.
Then beef taken out and wrapped in foil. Fried a chopped onion, garlic and carrots, then stock from slow cooker sieved into fried onion. Added 1 tbsp tomato puree, 1 teaspoon marmite, 1 teaspoon mustard and 2 tbsp worcester sauce.
Then shredded the beef and added to the sauce, with a bit more water and 1 tbsp bisto granules to thicken. Bubbled for 20 mins - served with crusty bread.0 -
Hi, I'm going to try a ham shank in my slow cooker for the first time tomorrow. I've got it soaking overnight in cold water to get rid of some of the salt.
I want to make a pea and ham soup. My plan was to soak yellow split peas overnight; then in the morning fry onion, garlic and carrot, add the yellow split peas, some water and mixed herbs; add the ham shank and leave to cook. Then once cooked, shred the ham, and add back to the stock.
Could anyone tell me - because the shank has a layer of fat, will this make my soup greasy?Does anyone have any other methods to avoid this?
Thanks!0 -

Sorry if this query has come up before, but....ages ago I tried doing spag bol in my slow cooker. Despite browning the mince a bit first, the texture of the bolognese was all mushy and horrible! Where did I go wrong - you lot are always raving about bol, chilli etc done in the SC?!

Cooked too long probably. It's a meal that doesn't really need all day long in the SC. I've had a mushy one too. Nowadays for meals like this I tend to do them on the high setting for a shorter time when I get in from work - say from 4pm to 7pm. After all, mince doesn't take a lot of cooking.Wendy x0

In mine tonight after eating up all the fridge stuff is some stewing steak browned, with an onion, carrot, parsnip and a few sprouts which had been sweated, a bit of stock and the remains of a jar of Ragu Redwine and herb sauce. Been on since 8:30am and kids and OH were having it for tea with Mash and I've got some waiting for when I get home! Yum!Made it - 15 years married!! Finally!! xx:beer:0

Thinking about doing a meatloaf in mine today. Got beef mince and sausagemeat out of freezer last night, going to add stuffing, egg, herbs, chopped mushrooms. Also got some left over pancetta to wrap over.
Has anyone done this before? I think you just stick the tin in water and leave for a few hours. Will report back...0
