Hi; am about to make a beef stew for tomorrow lunchtime; do I then add the dumplings for the last hour or so?? Advice gratefully received!!

  • Sounds good!! Do you put any other liquid in? Any ideas with what I can do with campbells condensed soups and the chops in a slow cooker - there were some good offers and I have a glut of tins now :D

You don't need much liquied in the slow cooker as it creates its own. As for condensed soups, they are great for making chicken or veg lasagne, I use them in place of a white or cheese sauce. Delicious!

quick and easy filling for 2 vegetarian lasagnes when you dont have time or energy!
each lasagne serves 6 with salad or vegetables

    2 tins chopped tomatoes
    2 tins ratatouille
    1 tin sweetcorn
6oz red lentils cooked for 10 minutes in vegetable stock until nearly soft.
    table spoon mixed herbs.

place everything in slow cooker and cook on high for 3 hours, then make into lasagne with cheap lasagne sheets, and 4 packets of instant cheese sacue (currently in asda 4 for a £1)

1 for now and 1 for the freezer!
It's the start of the no takeaway challenge.

    Chilli for me.

I don't brown my mince first. I put it in the slow cooker, stir in my spices add chopped cooked onion and garlic, rinsed kidney beans and a tin of tomatoes.

Let me know how it turns out and whether it is tender? I haven't cooked a beef joint either and keep meaning to but worried I'll mess it up and it'll be a waste of money! :o

YAY it worked just fine!! I had it on low for 5 3/4hrs and it was lovely and tender. I had chopped 4 carrots in with it and put a oxo cube and a bit of bisto powder in too and about an inch of boiling water. ooo and the gravy was lovely!! (I blitzed the carrots into the stock yummy) I think if I did it again I would put an onion in and probably a bit more water too.

I put the dumplings in for the last 30 minutes to an hour depending on how organized I am.

Not putting anything in mine today. Was preparing at 5.50am yesterday so the family would have a hot meal. OH said "I don't want any" and the kids showed little interest and left most of theirs. Wondering why I'm bothering peeling and chopping fresh veg and meat and tinkering about with seasonings to provide a homecooked hot meal. Planned nothing for tonight - they can eat chicken nuggets if that's what they prefer. Totally demotivated and hurt.

i know the feeling, my DH and two boys can be quite fussy as well - nobody was over-excited by my beef stew last weekend and DH picked at it like a child! try again, maybe with a different type of slow cooker meal, there's all sorts you can make - DH has since admitted he doesn't really like stew (never said this before!) but happily eats the chili, chicken breasts etc that i make in the slow coooker...

on a slightly different note, have you ever tried making home-made chicken nuggets? (not in the slow cooker though - in the oven!) i use about 2-3 medium chicken breasts, cut them up into reasonable sized chunks or strips, dip each one in plain four, then beaten up egg, then lastly coat with crushed up cornflakes (but breadcrumbs would also be nice). then bake at about 200 for approx 15 minutes. they are more expensive than the ones you can buy in the freezer section, but really tasty and you know exactly what's in them.

good luck with feeding your family! xx
