    I've noticed that with chicken.
Last time this happened I chucked in a couple of tins of chopped tomatoes and that got rid of the greasiness.

I don't really put chicken in the s/c anymore as it's either too greasy (from being browned beforehand, I guess) or it gets a very strong, almost gamey flavour (I made chicken noodle soup last week, very strong taste to the chicken, I used organic chicken thighs)

Anyone else notice this or is it just me?
Is is better to put chicken on HIGH for a few hours instead of LOW all day???

i defrost chicken pieces overnight in fridge then brown in frying pan. i take them out half way thro browning and pull off skin and any nasty bits then chuck them back in frying pan for another few seconds then wipe with kitchen towel before i put them in the slow cooker

I always do my chicken on low, and never brown it first. I use skinless only, and haven't noticed either greasiness or a strong flavour.

The pork parasites are Trichinella spiralis and Toxoplasma gondii parasite, and are rare, but if passed to humans can cause really nasty affects. Pork can also carry salmonella. If you cook pork properly it's fine (like with chicken) but because of the parasites (which you don't get in chicken) it has to be cooked to a higher temperature.

Most comercially reared pigs are fed antibiotics but with the increase in organic and naturally reared meat the percentage of infected pigs is rising.

Its fine to cook pork on low/medium, so long as you whack it up to high for the last hour or two and make sure it gets good and bubbly.

Hmm, interesting, I don't think I browned it last time when I made the soup.
Will keep an eye on this thread!!!

  • I combined various ideas on here for a frankfurter and bean stew this evening.

    chopped onion
    tin of baked beans
    tin of chopped tomatoes
    chopped frankfurters
    dash of worcestershire sauce
squeeze each of lazy ginger and coriander
    paprika

    on low all day

Served with some (half price) garlic and herb flatbread. Rave reviews from the kids!
  • I have prepared mine ready for tomorrow.

    chopped Carrots
    Chopped Onion
    Chopped Mushrooms
Two small Chicken Breasts going in 2moz morning.

Will be adding some water, havent decided if any Spicy Chilli Seasoning. On Low 7-5pm

Once home might drain the water slice the chicken up, stuff all the above into some Wraps which are open and breaking up when folded so no good for my Lunch.
Add to a Tray, cover in a Creamy Pasta Sauce thats in the Cupboard or chilli sauce and chuck in the Oven.
    sounds alright dont it ?

  • Sounds great!!

I'm doing a bolognese in mine today - with some red wine and lentils for good measure.
