In mine today - stewing steak, carrots, onions, swede, celery, leeks, parsnips, outer leaves from a 'curly cabbage', potatoes, mixed herbs, soup&broth mix, beef stock cubes and veg stock cubes = Scouse !

(Bet my adult-kids smell it cooking and arrive around tea-time!)

This may sound like a silly question but with the soup & broth mix in the slow cooker do you cook it first or not xx

Hi Clairelouise - I normally soak it overnight (only because it contains dried peas which are notoriously hard if not pre-soaked). Unfortunately I forgot to put it to soak last night, so this morning I brought it to the boil and let it simmer while I was prepping all the veggies, rinsed it and then added to the SC and gave it all a darn good stir to mix it in properly.

I dissolve my stock cubes in boiling water and add that as well - only using just enough water to cover all the veggies. The veg makes it's own liquid during cooking and I don't want to much liquid in the pot.

Mine is a 6.5lt MR one.

Well I'm having the stew mentioned in my post above, riight now. The only flaw is that I put a too much carrot in, which has made it a bit too sweet. It's still delicious though and the meat is really mouth-watering.

Is a 'stew' type meal the best one to cook in a slow cooker? My Oh is not very fond of stew and I don't want to invest in a SC if it is not going to be used all the time, have no space for unused gadgets, nor can I afford to buy them...thinking of a 3.5 litre one as again OH is not fond of food that has been frozen (he does have some good points, really) so would not be doing much in the line of batch cooking.
    TIA for your advice

No, if you flick through this thread you will find lots of non stew recipes. you can even bake spuds in a slow cooker. Joints of meat, rice pudding (thats my fav) and my famous poached pears are just a few, if your not doing batch cooking then get a small one. My mum has a 1 litre and likes to cook porridge overnight in hers.:D
  • I us my SC a lot but never cooked a whole joint of meat or whole chicken in it.I will have a look through posts to find out how this is done as I am trying to cut down on using electricity if I can. I assume you brown the joint first but do not know if you add water or oil.

A big pot of savoury mince will be cooking in mine later on, then tomorrow it will be mushroom and chickpea curry. What did I do before I got my slow cooker?! It's just so great to be at work, down the gym, whatever and know there's a hot meal cooking whilst you're away.

Meanmarie - as others have said, you can use a slow cooker for so many things - chilli, curry, bolognaise, some people make cakes in theirs, they really are very versatile.

Edit - see my post below - just found out stuffed peppers are possible too! So, presumably, are other stuffed veg such as aubergines, etc. Great!
