A big piece of Beef Topside. Ahhh, the aroma... been cooking for up to 7 hours (not an exact science), and the meat just falls apart when I show it the carving knife! Superb. Served 5 of us with leftovers to spare.

With left-overs, made several beef and vegetable pasties, using Aldi 45p Puff Pastry, gonna serve them for dinner tomorrow evening with chips and baked beans. :money:

I'm thinking of doing a curry tomorrow. I normally would use some sort of ready made sauce but I'm trying not to do that now. Anyone got any good recipies?

BBC good food are a good site here. Let me know how you get on. I haven't done a curry in ages.

Not sure what I'm doing in mine. I was just going to reheat yesterdays venison and veg, but fancy doing chicken soup, with HM bread (I can microwave the venison). I have got a carcass sitting in the fridge, which I'm loathe to waste.

Thanks everyone. I woke up a bit adventurous this morning so the curry is a bit of an experiment!

First I browned and softened 2 small onions with some garlic and ginger, then added a pack of diced turkey (yellow sticker 56p!) then I added some curry powder (heaped teaspoon ish) and a pinch of chilli powder. I browned of the meat, then added this to the slow cooker with a tin of chopped tomatoes, a handful of lentils, a chopped yellow pepper and some tomatoes which were at the bottom of the fridge.

I'm going to leave it on high for an hour then turn it down. I will review it this afternoon and see if it needs something added to it! I'll let you know how I get on.

I'm planning to serve it with brown rice and nann breads. Oh and loads of mango chutney mmmmmm.
Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

    Hi,

First few days of slow cooker-ing are done! All fun and games so far. Just a couple of questions, which may already have been answered here. Forgive me if they have, I'm only on about page 40 and I feel like I've been reading for days!

1 - I've seen a couple of things about cooking pork and chicken on high for maybe 4 hours rather than leaving them on low for the whole day. I have a recipe book which has a couple of recipes for each, and they are to be cooked on low. Who is right?

2 - I've also seen something on here about setting timer plugs. This would be useful for me as I'm out of the house from just after 7.30 until at least 6.30, and not everything needs to be on that long. However, I've also read something about the liquid having to be hot when it's put in the dish. Again, what is correct? Maybe both are, new to this lark.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully once I get the hang of it I'll be submitting interesting recipes along with the rest of you!

    Helly poolygal!

1 - Its fine to put on high for four hours rather than all day. I do it frequently.

2 - Some dishes will be fine to put on low that long, such as stews, soups, etc. There was a phase where both me and OH were out all day for those hours, and found that I didn't need a timer, we just came home to a lovely meal. Things like peppers, ets can go really soft though if left in too long. I usually put hot liquid in myself, if putting on low though. Might be a good idea to have a google. :D
  • Does anybody have a copy of the instruction manual/menu booklet for a Cookworks SC35A Slow Cooker purchased from Argos a few years ago?

If so, i would appreciate a copy if this could be arranged?

    Thanks

Chicken breasts in mine at the moment with red peppers, garlic, tomatoes and some italian herbs not very exciting but smells lovely, going to pop on a soup later with the sad looking carrots and turnips I have left over from the other day :)

mines techincally not one yet (there's a big 'switch me on' sign stick to it for the morning though) but in is is 4 diced chicken breasts (seasoned) and 2 tubs of Asda fresh veg soup - I'll cook it on low all day and then transfer it to the oven with cheesy dumplings when I get home.
