Whenever I do spag bol/chilli I brown off the meat first (as it also helps get rid of the excess fat) – I stick mine on low about 7:30/7:45am and get back from work about 6:15pm and its lurvly!!!!! I will often leave it for an extra 20 minutes or so while I do some garlic bread.

Thanks, I put the mince on about 10ish this morning and we will be having it about 6.30ish so should be good, first time I've tried mince. Done a stew when I first got my SC about couple of weeks ago, and rice pud, both deeelishous:p
But I did a gammon joint last Sunday because it was just over 2lb I put it in about midnight, I checked it about 9 in the morning and it was not cooked. so I turned it over and left it, it must have been in there for about 14 hours, it was horrible very dry and stringy. Anyone got any ideas why it turned out like this? I started it off on high for about an hour then on low the rest of the time, about half way up the joint with water and pineapple juice. Still plenty of liquid in the SC when I took the joint out.
It really put me off trying anything else, as it was such a waste as it ended up in the bin.

I always find it best sealing the meat in a frying pan before putting it in the slow cooker :o

    Hi all

I've been totally inspired by the posts on this thread so went out and bought a £10 SC from Tesco and have had a week of plucking up the courage to use it! But todays the day - nothing too inspiring: lamb stew like (hopefully) mum used to make. It went on at 7.30 - will be home by 4.30 to eat at about 6.30.

    Wish me luck!

go for it Kimmee, try to make a note of what works and what doesn't. I have found that some recipes have come out great, but I can't remember exactly what I put in..

Got nothing in the slow cooker today, but will use this thread to ask a question!

Can you reheat food in the a slow cooker, or only cook from fresh? I made some chicken and beef casseroles and froze them. I don't know if I can put them back in the SC or if the temperatures wouldn't be high enough for re-heating.

Don't want to undo my domestic goddess-ness by poisoning the family! Wouldn't do my credentials any good at all.

  • I wouldn't reheat in the SC as it would take too long. I'd use the microwave or into a pot on the hob.

I wouldn't reheat in it either. When reheating food you need to get it as hot as possible as quick as possible so use a microwave or a pan on the hob.
