Yesterday I made a huge chilli using a pack of minced steak I got reduced it Mr T for £1.55. Following tips I got from here I added some pre-soaked red lentils and beans (black eyed ones as I can't be bothered with boiling up kidney beans!!) and used value tinned toms and it was lovely! " big portions for me and OH last night and 4 slightly smaller ones went in the freezer, roughly 50p a portion I would think!!!
Tonight I'm having a kind of italian style chicken thing I made up last week......leftovers again went in the freezer.
Tomorrow I'll be making a big beef stew using Mr T's value stewing beef and veg from my BOGOF stew pack (I got one of these and a bag of baking potatoes). Couldn't get any pearl Barley though....where do others get it?0 -

Is that a bit like the columbian beef stew recipe in one of my books? Thats really nice.Following tips I got from here I added some pre-soaked red lentils and beans (black eyed ones as I can't be bothered with boiling up kidney beans!!) and used value tinned toms and it was lovely! I actually used lentils to bulk my mince out for the first time. I use for other things normally. I was really pleased with the results.
I used 1/2 a 700g Tesco's steak mince pack which cost approx £3.33. It should feed us for 2 days more, hopefully. The other 1/2 fed the dog for 3 nights mixed with his dry food. :T0 -

Most supermarkets sell pearl barley. It's in the section with lentils, split peas etc.0 -
I had a freebie ham bone form the supermarket deli and added an onion, a couple of carrots, a handful of red lentils and seasoning which I made into a yummy soup for lunch. It was just a shame I was late in putting the bread machine on this morning, so we had no bread to go with it!0

I don't know, but it's really, really simple. Start with a couple of onions, chopped and 4 garlic cloves, minced. Brown them off if you have time (or just throw them in the SC uncooked if in a hurry - both works). Add a pound of beef, cubed and seasoned - again either browned off or raw. Then a handful of dried apricots, cut in half (I prefer the old fashioned ones, not those soft fluffed up ones). I think the recipe says 100 g. Also add 50g of sundried tomatoes, roughly chopped. Pour a tin of chopped tomatoes over and add as much water as you see fit - don't drown it, but you do want the final dish to be juicy, not dry.
Cook on low until the meat is nice and tender. I often serve it with couscous, but mash is nice as well - especially with some celeriac in it.
This tastes quite exotic, but strangely enough there are no spices in it at all! I come back to this recipe all the time, and DH just loves it. It freezes very well, too."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -

do supermarkets give ham bones away? (i'v never noticed anyone mentioning this before)0 -
Being a good little MSEer I prepped all the veggies and 'juice' for my beef stew before I went to bed last night then got up extra early this morning to brown the beef and even deglazed the pan.......and was still at work at 6.45am!!! What a good girl I am!!! Just hop the stew will be ok on low for 12hrs+!
Oh and I have to say theres so much yummy veg in it its more like a veg stew with beef than a beef stew!!0 -
I've got beef stew in mine as well -yum!!!
Champys - that sounds really nice - definately a recipe I will be trying next time I buy some beef!!!!!0
