What happened with last nights attempt?!

Ah. Well. :rotfl: No it wasn't that bad. The stew was a little tasteless but I sorted that no problem but the beef was a bit chewy. It went on high at 7.30am then down to low at 8am when I left and back onto high when I got in at 6.15pm for the dumplings till 7pm so I would have though it had long enough.

So the chicken and leek stroganoff..... disaster lol. It burnt!!! On Low! I rescued it and it tasted...interesting. Not enough liquid I think (only a large glass of white wine)

The third attempt was yesterday with a beef jalfreizi. Never again! Despite having a tin of toms and 800ml stock, it still dried out and the edges started burning. Again, I rescued it (some pataks) but if I wanted to use patacks I wouldn't bother making my own pastes  (which have always worked on the hob)

DH thinks it could be because its a 5.5l machine and i'm not really filling it up enough. I've been cooking enough for 4 so I thought that would be ok.

Anyway my SC is having a rest today - mainly because I want something edible for tea tonight :rotfl:

    SK x

Ps - I really can cook fantastic meals other ways, this SC seems to be getting the better of me tho. I'm quite disappointed tbh as I was looking forward to time and money saved.

That really could be the reason. I find that if I don't fill mine, things do burn around the edges - I've got a 6.5l. Always fill it and make enough for extra portions for the freezer.

I picked up an excellent book awhile ago at a bootie called "Real Food from your slo-cooker" by Annette Yates & Wendy Hobson. It basically shows you can cook practically anything in your slow cooker! Including pineapple upside down cake!!

costs £4.59 and is in stock!
    Enjoy!

This is still available - just bought a used copy for £2.09!

    Help please
I'm new to slow cooking and I want to cook a small bacon joint tomorrow to eat with mash and cabbage. I would then like to make pea and ham soup with the stock. Has anyone got any advice / recipes for this - my other half pulled a face when I mentioned cooking it in coke so that's a no no!

How much water do I add to the bacon and do I add anything else?
Also any nice pea and ham soup recipes?

    Many thanks

  • Is it normal for slow cookers to spit water out of them?
I got a cookworks one from argos which I ended up throwing away as I thought it was broke. After about 6 hours of it being on, everything would start bubbling then the water would spit out somehow making the lid move to the side so water would go everywhere.
I got another one, a rival crockpot one, and it does the same thing. So is that normal or am I doing something wrong?
It makes me not want trust it, I'd like to go out and leave stuff in it without thinking it'll blow up!

I just put my gammon joint in with a couple of carrots, an onion, a bay leaf and a few peppercorns, fill up with water and cook all day. Lift the joint out and slice for your meal or the freezer. Personally I then leave the stock in the ceramic pot overnight in a cool place (or fridge if you have room). Soak your split peas overnight (or broth mix or whatever pulses you're using) and add to stock with more carrots, onions, perhaps some diced potato. I cook this all the next day and just add some scraps of cooked ham just before the end. Adjust seasoning to taste as can be salty. You can liquidise if you want but I tend to just use a potato masher. Ham has a nice herby flavour done this way.

Perhaps a bit rough and ready but it works for me.
