not sure about frozen, but def spent a night in the fridge

I thought perhaps it wasn't defrosted long enough. It wouldn't make a difference if it was a defrosted bird at fridge temperature (as per Sui_Generis). It could be faulty, or maybe the lid wasn't on properly. It was opened to turn during cooking (as per Berni888), and that can add to the cooking time, although it shouldn't have affected it that much.

I would definitely encourage them to try again, and if it doesn't cook properly this time, the slow cooker must be faulty.

I am going to try at the weekend. The folks turned it, stuck a thermometer in it a 'couple' of times.... and the recipe said 5-6 hours.... I think the removing of the lid must have added a couple of hours to this.....

I will see how it goes...hopefully will be back next week..

    Agreed, it sounds defective.

That will have interrupted the cooking - its one of the more difficult aspects of SC cooking initially - just leave it alone! :)

OK pleased with myself today I'm in the process of making meatballs (beef) for spaghetti tonight and reusing the excess sauce from the delicious chicken breasts the other day! If only I could crank them out faster.... The last turkey meatballs were a hit so I hope the beef is too!

Going to use Sublime's meatball recipe to make a batch for myself next week.

I've never cooked a whole chicken in an SC, but to speed up normal oven roasting for chicken or turkey, and add nice flavour, I put a lemon or orange in the microwave for a minute (with a few fork holes put in it). I then pop this in the chicken cavity - so it gets some heat straight into the middle. Do use oven gloves though as the fruit gets very very hot. This might help.

Today Ive got a chickpea curry in my big slow cooker and spag bol in my small one. Im trying to fill the freezer with easy meals before my due date next saturday so have everything prepped for a turkey casserole and a chilli as soon as their empty!
    Belly Monkey arrived 19.11.09 :j
  • I've just put some chick peas, yellow and green split peas in to soak. Tonight before I go to work (night shift) I will add them to a bag of chicken thighs, a tin of tomatoes chopped, a quarter of a jar of Patak's curry paste, some carrot and onion. That should make 6 - 8 portions of curry, some to have tomorrow and the rest for the freezer.

When I cook a whole chicken, it goes in on it's tod on low and I just leave it for 8-10 hours depends on how long I'm out for.

Thanks for that as we're doing a chicken tomorrow. Can see it's going to have to go in the SC whenever we get up!
