Is it normal for slow cookers to spit water out of them?
I got a cookworks one from argos which I ended up throwing away as I thought it was broke. After about 6 hours of it being on, everything would start bubbling then the water would spit out somehow making the lid move to the side so water would go everywhere.
I got another one, a rival crockpot one, and it does the same thing. So is that normal or am I doing something wrong?
It makes me not want trust it, I'd like to go out and leave stuff in it without thinking it'll blow up!

doesnt sound normal to me, i've never had any liquid spit out - are you over filling it possibly?

Mine does this,I have a Breville,it doesnt do it when i cook on low, only on high and the stock etc is actualy bubbling hot,its just steam/condensation escaping,i think some models may have a small steam vent in the lid for this but mine doesnt, its not any great amount tho,and i am normaly at home when it happens,so i just quickly wipe the underside of the lid with kitchen roll to dry it and this resolves the problem, dunno if maybe its the stronger strength models that do this, mine is a 220-240watt,some others are as low as 90watt,however,from my experience the steam escaping in this way is more a nuiscance than a worry.

PS,Forgot to add, i made lentil soup today,so easy but so tasty,1 large ham hough, chopped onion/leek/celery and grated carrot, red lentils,1 low salt vegetable stock cube, boiling water, left it on high for first few hours, then left on low for around 4hrs when we went shopping, the smell coming home was delicious,1st time ive made slow cooker soup, will certainly do it again.

I am going to try at the weekend. The folks turned it, stuck a thermometer in it a 'couple' of times.... and the recipe said 5-6 hours.... I think the removing of the lid must have added a couple of hours to this.....

I will see how it goes...hopefully will be back next week..
1.2 kg bird in the cooker with nothing but a little bit of butter and salt and pepper on top. 9 hours on high, fell apart as i lifted it out :D I will have a word with the folks later... thanks all.

I'll be doing butterbean, veg and coconut tagine in mine - well, not strictly a tagine as no tagine is involved - oh, you know what I mean!

    Hopefully will be yummy!

  • Chicken going in mine, too , once DH has cleaned out the crockpot from last nights Irish Stew and dumplings (which was YUM!)

Planning on doing Cooking-mama's ham hough soup tomorrow. Was it salty or fine? I ask because last time I used the ham stock from a joint I cooked it was very salty without adding any extra.
I think I should have added some extra water which I didn't that time.

The oxtail pieces are now in mine - rolled in flour and 'seared' first. Along with diced swede, carrots, onions, dark green leek trimmings cut up small, celery, pearl barley, dried mixed herbs, couple of bay leaves and three oxo cubes.

I've set the timer for 10hrs, but we'll see how it's getting on around 6.00pm.

I'm about to try and adapt this for the slow cooker - and I'm also going to try no-suet dumplings in there as well! It's a day of experimentation!
