OH is cooking 12 pigeon breasts which his dad gave us, with bacon, mushrooms, shallots, garlic, red wine, and herbs. For a pigeon pie.
He cut the pigeon into strips, coated in seasoned flour, and lightly browned in butter first, before adding to the slow cooker with all the other ingredients
My MIL would love that. She is a v.good cook and on occasions makes a large game pie.If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

stewing steak, carrots, onion & half a leek with a nice thick gravy & loads of mustard, will add dumplings later
oh actually i want to add mushrooms but am not sure when? (do you fry them first or just add?)

I just put everything in the slow cooker for a beef casserole (without pre-frying) and I haven't noticed much difference. There are some things I pre-brown such as a whole chicken; purely for appearance.0 -

well, i'm home and woopsied beef chanti had 9 1/2 hours on low, after i browned and brought to the boil on the hob, and whilst i'm pleased the carrots are cooked, the beef itsnt as melty as i'd like. perhaps its a bad cut? but then i was worried about it cooking down to soup, so i guess that's a good thing really? (i'll do it on medium next time). Now i've turned it to high, then i'll put the dumplings in and give it an hour - i REALLY hope the beef goes melty...
and happily the dried goods experiement worked = the little extra water, due to barley & split peas, has turned into lovely gravy and they are also cooked.

1lb mince separated, mixed with loads of crushed garlic, dried herbs, ground coriander, and a bit of salt and pepper, then made into little balls, lightly browned in olive oil (to seal them so they kept their shape), before adding to slow cooker with ingredients for sauce.
He didn't use any other binding ingredient, and it lasted 3 days.0 -

The oven will be on for 1 1/2 hours so I am also going to make a large apple cake that also takes an hour to cook.If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
