You can try cider or apple juice instead of water too!

What a fab idea! I have some Devon Traditional Scrumpy hanging around - I'll use that for the other half of the ham! Ooohhh - can't wait!:j

    Hello.

Tomorrow I am planning on using my SC for the first time in years (must remember to clean it first;) ).

In it I am going to put some pork loin steaks, tinned tomatoes, onion & carrots plus stock.

I would like to use some pearl barley. Does anyone know if I have to cook it first, or can I just launch a handful in at the beginning?

Any suggestions about enhancing the recipe would be gratefully received.

Do you have to put liquid into a slow cooker? I bought one today that said the pot must always have liquid in it, yet I found some recipes that didn't really seem to have much liquid. What does everyone do?

I have a pot of creme fraiche in the fridge that needs using - can anyone suggest a nice slow cooker recipe with this in please?

    xx

I didn't think you could use dairy in a slow cooker as the lower temp for long periods of time aren't 'healthy' and the dairy stuff goes off........

Just throw a handful in, pearl barley is lovely because it doesn't need soaking or anything like some of the pulses.

I've got a handful of pearl barley in mine now, along with some defrosted casserole veggies, some chicken from the rubber chicken roasted in the table top oven for tea, the carcase from said chicken, some stock and some gravy granules. Will let the lot cook on medium for 3 or 4 hours tonight, decant it and take out bones and yucky bits, then add some dumplings tomorrow for tea.

i've got a small chicken in mine cooking now. was cheaper to buy a small chicken for sandwiches than to buy 3 chicken breast's.

Will use some of it to turn it into a casserole for tomoz dinner.

I think if you put it in for the last half hour of cooking it will be fine. I've done that with slow cooker recipes & creme fraiche.

Here's a lovely cider chicken recipe:

Saute some shallot onions and garlic
    Add chicken breasts
Pour over 3/4 pints of cider
    Salt and pepper
Cook on low for 5-6 hours
Add 3 tablespoons of creme fresh and some tarragon (dried is fine)
Cook for a further 30 mins

    *sneaks in*

I am picking up a slow cooker which is reserved in Argos for me today. Wanted one with a timer but they were all too expensive so getting a normal one and getting a plug timer instead :D (kiwi is a genius)

I have two pork chops that we were going to have for dinner tonight but I want to put them in my new slow cooker tomorrow morning now for dinner when I get home. What should I get to put in with them? Will just need to be a take away or something tonight! :rotfl:
