Hi, omnasia, you post wasn't there when I posted my last message.

Just a couple of thoughts, just wondering if your dogs are picking up on your fear, when you go near that bedroom?

If I lived in an old house, I'd like to find out about the history, particularly if I had a photo of the people who lived there - the census records are a good place to start. But if you are going to go down that route, do it out of interest, not because you expect to uncover a dark secret.

I've found vicars are good people to talk to - the vicar who did my paretns funeral helped me a great deal. I'm not particularly religious, but I count myself as a Christian - I still think if the church is involved, it would be nice to have a belief

    Hello OP

I wont keep this long, but it has been the plan all along to stop people from believing in faiths of any kind. Every single faith states clearly that we are not the only creation. There are other beings that live amongst us which we cannot see.

When a place of dwelling is unattended for a long long period of time, other beings will begin to inhabit the place.

Then obviously you crash the party so they will create mischief because that is what they do.

Some are kind, some are not.

Fear is like a fuel for these things, as is non faith.

If the vicar thing doesnt work out, PM me.

When I was a kid I had relatives that lived in four terraced houses on one street. It was a weird set up, you could go in house number one and come out in number four as they were all linked with internal doors, however, my cousin and I never went into number 2 because it 'wasn't right'. I can't explain it any more that that. It just wasn't right.

Most of the family avoided house 2 and the family member who lived there always said it was haunted. Family member eventually died and house went up for sale.
While the house was empty the family member who remained next door would hear noises, in particular the old fireplaces being raked out which was interesting as the old fireplaces had been replaced with gas fires years ago. Time and time again they let themselves in expecting to find burglars but there was nothing.

House passed out from family to a new family, a young couple. The couple moved in, spent thousands renovating. They complained to family member the house 'wasn't right'. Nobody had mentioned this to the new couple and family member, not wanting to worry them lied and said they had never had a problem.

6 months after moving in the new family packed up one night and moved out to live with her mother. They never returned. Said they couldn't live there and wouldn't spend another night.

House went back up for sale and sold again 6 months ago. So far as far as I know the new buyers are happy.

I have no belief in God, though I do feel that some part of us can possibly remain, who knows. I do know though that before it was ever mentioned to me I never felt comfortable in that house and 35 years on it seems nothing has changed.

    Hi OP

A few years ago I lived in a house an old terrace that used to be a shop, when I went to bed on a night I would shut the bedroom door and make sure the latched clicked but every night the door would slowly swing open whilst I was lying in bed. I would be paralysed with fear!

Now the rational part of me knows that this was just the door wasn't quite shut as well as I thought. However, I was told by a neighbour that Ted who owned the shop had said he would never leave and my kitchen was the scene of an armed robbery!! (thanks neighbour!!!) When my boyfriend moved in he 'told' Ted he would look after me. Never happened again. Though it is just as likely that my boyf was a bit firmer at shutting the door.

    let us know what happens
  • Ohh I'm really intrigued now - wonder what they mean "leave the past in the past"? Sounds like there's a history.

Will there be anyone sleeping in the "odd" room over the holidays?

    Blimey....

There are no ghosts, spirits, elves, pixies, gods or santa so do sleep well, and lay off the booze and cheese before bed time.

You want a bet? And this is coming from a atheist...I have seen things happen and believe me if it was anyone else, I as i used to do would laugh at them..But one thing changed all that..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
  • This is a really interesting thread.

I think it is quite funny that despite us being in an age of rampant scientific progress we still very quickly use mysticism to fill in the gaps. Rather than try and observe what is causing the problems we jump to some completely odd suggestions!

The problem with humans is we give our modern selves far too much credit - we are still animals that live on instincts that have kept us alive and often paranoia is one of them. If you do not feel happy and safe in your surroundings you are far more likely to pick up on things than if you were in your comfy old home.

Give it time and you will get used to it.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I'm loving this thread! OP - I hope you don't say anything about your feelings to your children as it would be interesting to see if they hear anything.

    Please keep us updated.
  • I'm a big fan of Supernatural and other such tv shows, but it wouldn't dawn on me to think 'ghost' if I heard a noise at night. I would be far more scared of a mortal intruder that a ghostly one at any rate.

PS You wouldn't want to live in my house, OP. One of my cats likes to play piano in the dead of night. Used to scare the pants off us all - she plays loudly! Another cat bodyslams my son's bedroom door until it gives and opens for her. So nighttime racket is nothing new here, I'm afraid. I think if there was a ghost looking for my attention, I wouldn't even notice.
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

  • I'm sure your dog is picking up on your fear.

Regarding the women at church and their lack of response to your queries on the former residents: Did they really say, "Leave the past alone," or were they just sort of dismissive? I say that because it's possible they picked up on your desire to find some deep, dark secret and they were just trying to let you know you had it wrong.

Or possibly they'd been friendly with the former residents and were offended at the tacit suggestion that terrible, devious things had been happening in the house.

If you're a religious person, I see no harm in having the vicar over to discuss how you're feeling. I bet with time however you'll grow used to your new home and feel much more comfortable.
